Mad Max and Family: Bringin' Baby Home

Hi Friends,

We are going to take a break from our regular scheduled post today (Thursday's Kids and T(w)eens) since we are focusing on all things newborn this week.

First, Houstonians: did you have the chance to comment on our blog from Saturday for your chance to win a Whole Foods $50.00 giftcard? ?Tomorrow is your day to enter ... be sure to join us on the Whole Trade adventure this month and enter! ?It's very simple. ?Feel free to spread the love too (and Whole Trade Month is for a great cause!). ?Good luck!

Second, in celebration of my super sister (Super Sadie) we are focusing on Bringin' Baby Home today. Have you brought a baby home? ?How was that like your first few days or week? ?What memories do you have to share with us? ?What about for a second baby? ?Tips and tricks?

Mommy and Daddy aren't too nervous about it this go around (they had plenty of that with me) ... but this time is just balancing both of us. ?Don't worry, Mommy and Daddy ... I'll be here to help! ?We'll be sure to share with you how everything goes. ?Let us know if you have any questions for us too.

Mommy said the key is first of all to have help as she recovers from her C-Section ... and second of all to have a flexible schedule (this doesn't work for everyone, but it works for her). ?She strongly believes and follows Secrets of the Baby Whisperer (E.A.S.Y. Schedule = Eat, Activity Time, Sleep, and You Time) and Baby Wise. ?Not everyone believes in sleep training, but my doctor recommended very similar suggestions too. ?It worked the first night for me! ?Sadie, I hope it works for you too. ?Because Big Brother needs his sleep ... yah know what I'm sayin'?

We are also hoping for lots of kind visitors! ?I can't keep those ladies both entertained each day all day. ?Whew. ?That would be exhausting.

Now ... I'll share with you a few photos from my first few days home ... what do you think?

LOOKING BACK: Mad Max

Wow, can someone cut off the cuffs? ?And throw a boy some pants.

What do you mean you have to / want to go to work today? ?Throwing Asian eyes at you, Daddy.

Mommy's sweet sleeper. ?During the day!

I've come a long way since those Asian eyes. ?No? ?(And just when I lose my leg cuffs, I get arm cuffs).

Ohhh, if I try real hard and stretch, I'm longer than you Hoodie Bear!

Private Jets Help People Beat the Hassles of Air Travel

(NewsUSA) ? Remember when you thought flying was fun?

That was before the days when airplane cabins felt like cattle cars, when baggage wasn?t something to be nickel and dimed over, and when TSA screeners ? yes, them ? thought frisking 89-year-old former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger at LaGuardia Airport recently made perfect sense.

?Surely there?s ? some middle ground between illegal profiling and patting down octogenarians,? the New York Times editorialized.

Little wonder that research by the U.S. Travel Association suggests that about 41 million people avoid air travel yearly because of the so-called ?hassle factor.?

Ah, but you don?t have to put up with the hassles.

These days, it?s easier than you think to travel by private jet ? largely because of wider choices that include buying anywhere from an entire jet to as little as one-sixteenth of a share in one, as well as purchasing jet cards. Flexjet (www.flexjet.com), for example, through its expanded portfolio of solutions, caters to those seeking even more flexibility.

?We wanted to make it easier for people to see why we?re the premium experience in the private jet industry,? said Fred Reid, Flexjet?s president.

Picture it: After deciding as few as 10 hours earlier that you want to weekend in Aspen, say, or need to pack a multiple-city business trip into a single day, you arrive at one of the 5,000 airports accessible by private aircraft nationwide (compared to just 450 for commercial airlines). Whereupon, instead of long lines and pat-downs, you?re whisked aboard by ID-checking flight attendants.

Within minutes, you?re airborne and nibbling a bowl of warm nuts. (You remember nuts, right?)

?No oxygen-mask tutorials, no guy shoving his backpack into your overhead,? said Reid.

Then the real pampering begins.

Haute cuisine served on Pickard china. Ergonomic armchairs from which to comfortably work the phone. A table area that converts into a full-size bed with 600-thread count Egyptian linens.

All that was what convinced Tom Wyatt, the 33-year-old president of a private golf club in South Carolina, to start flying privately late last year. ?It?s just so simple and painless,? he told the Wall Street Journal.

As a division of Bombardier, the world?s largest business aviation manufacturer, Flexjet boasts the youngest fractional aircraft in the industry (averaging about five years) and impeccable customer service, and is about to add the much-anticipated, all-new Learjet 85 to its collection of Learjet and Challenger jets.

About the Learjet 85 aircraft: It can fly really, really fast.

Stocks are hammered by weak earnings reports

(AP) ? Nobody was expecting this earnings season to be great. But investors didn't expect the bad news from corporate bellwethers to be this bad, either.

Stocks plunged Tuesday, making it one of the worst days on Wall Street so far this year and sending the major indexes to their lowest levels since early September. Big-name companies reported weak quarterly earnings and lowered their forecasts for the rest of the year.

The Dow sank 253 points, or almost 2 percent, to 13,093 in midday trading. The Dow's biggest decline so far this year was 274 points. That was June 1, the day the government released an ominously weak jobs report.

Other indexes also fell sharply. The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 23 points to 1,411 and the Nasdaq composite index was off 33 points at 2,983. The Nasdaq hasn't closed below 3,000 since Aug. 6.

Companies of all stripes signaled that the economy is far from healed, and that demand isn't what it was a year ago. DuPont, 3M, UPS and Xerox all missed analysts' expectations for revenue.

Because of their global footprint and variety of products and services, those companies augur how the world economy is performing. Their revenue is important because consumer spending drives more than 70 percent of the U.S. economy.

The Federal Reserve has been trying to drive the economy by keeping interest rates low, but the earnings season has cast doubt on whether the strategy is working. The unemployment rate was 7.8 percent as of September, slightly lower than previous months but still far above the rate that signals full employment.

Chemical maker DuPont said it will have to cut jobs and other expenses after sales fell throughout the world. 3M, which makes all manner of products including Scotch tape and coatings for LCD screens, cut its profit predictions for the year.

UPS, the world's largest package-delivery company, warned that the pace of global growth remains uneven, and that the holiday shopping season could prove disappointing. Xerox reported steep declines in sales of equipment and supplies and noted that the "challenging economy" was causing "cost pressures for large enterprises and governments."

DuPont and Xerox were among the worst-performing stocks in the S&P 500. DuPont slid $4.59 to $45.17. Xerox was down 61 cents to $6.42. 3M slipped $2.96 to $89.57. The exception was UPS, which rose $1.88 to $73.44, after apparently convincing investors that it will be able to make money even in a weak economy.

Piling on to the weak earnings news, the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, Va., reported that manufacturing in the central Atlantic region "pulled back" in October, and said that manufacturers had grown less optimistic.

The price of crude oil fell, another sign that investors expect a weak economy. The yield on the benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury note sank to 1.77 percent from 1.82 percent Monday as nervous investors sold stocks and shifted money into low-risk U.S. government bonds.

Of the 123 companies in the S&P 500 that had reported earnings as of Monday, only 38 percent beat expectations on revenue, according to John Butters, senior earnings analyst at FactSet.

That's far below the average of 56 percent over the past four years and the lowest proportion since the first quarter of 2009, when the stock market hit its lowest point of the Great Recession.

Companies have done better on earnings: 67 percent have beat expectations so far, according to Butters. But investors are interested in revenue as a more accurate measure of growth, because earnings can swing wildly because of one-time factors like accounting gains.

Some of the disappointing revenue is due to weakness in foreign markets. Multinational companies are having a hard time selling to Europe, which has been hobbled by recession. The red-hot growth in emerging markets like China and India is also slowing down, and many businesses that had relied on growth there to offset weak U.S. consumer demand are being forced to come up with new strategies.

"The recession in Europe is very real," said Bernard Schoenfeld, senior investment strategist for Bank of New York Mellon Wealth Management in New York. "It's not going to disappear very quickly, and it will certainly negatively affect earnings of exporters in the United States."

Schoenfeld cited the weakness in materials companies as a reflection of the weakness in emerging markets.

Companies are blaming some of the revenue declines on the stronger dollar. That can crimp revenue in two ways: As the dollar gains value, as it has over the past year, the money that multinational companies make overseas translates into fewer dollars back at headquarters. And in foreign countries, the weakness of the local currency subdues spending there.

"They're feeling the pain of the stronger dollar," said Kathy Lien, managing director at BK Asset Management in New York. "Companies try to hedge, but they don't always hedge perfectly."

Lien said that so far this earnings season, Google, Philip Morris, IBM and Coca-Cola Bottling Co. have complained that the stronger dollar has hurt revenue.

Not only is the third quarter earnings season shaping up to be poorer than many expected, those companies that have been willing to make predictions about what's coming up in the fourth quarter have been overwhelmingly pessimistic.

Of the 23 companies in the S&P 500 that had made forecasts as of Monday, 18 lowered their expectations for fourth-quarter results, and five kept their forecasts roughly the same. None raised their forecasts.

Among other stocks making big news:

? Yahoo jumped 92 cents to $16.69, making it one of only about two dozen winners in the S&P 500. The company's first earnings report under Marissa Mayer as CEO easily beat the forecasts of Wall Street analysts. Yahoo hired Mayer from Google in July to orchestrate its latest turnaround attempt.

?Apple fell $9.43 to $624.60 ahead of the expected release of a smaller version of its iPad. Apple has the most sway among stocks in the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq composite and helped drive those indexes lower. A smaller, cheaper iPad could help Apple compete with Amazon's Kindle Fire and Google's Nexus 7. It's not clear how profitable a smaller tablet would be.

? Luxury handbag maker Coach soared 7 percent, the most in the S&P 500 index, after announcing a 3 percent bump in profits and a stock buyback program. The company's sales to China jumped 40 percent.

Enact tax code that brings growth, cuts debt

We have a serious debt issue in this country. Our annual deficit will be $1.1 trillion and, when that is added to the national debt, we will be $16 trillion in arrears. The Obama administration presided over $5.3 trillion of this amount in its first term. One of the president?s key platform planks is raising federal taxes on the wealthy. He feels millionaires should pay a minimum of 30 percent in income taxes and wants the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy to expire at year end. Yet the 30 percent minimum tax would yield only $5 billion a year while letting the tax cuts expire altogether would garner $67 billion more per annum. These are paltry sums when compared to the fact that the U.S. debt grows at a rate of $4 billion a day.

In addition, many of the wealthy are small business owners, entrepreneurs and investors who create jobs, invest in growing business and provide seed money for inventions and improvements that benefit all. Increasing taxes in a struggling economy is counterintuitive and counterproductive. The president has framed the tax increase as a fairness issue. The top 1 percent of earners already pays more than 38 percent of all federal income taxes while 47 percent of us pay no federal income taxes. Does that seem fair enough?

This country does not have a revenue problem. We have a spending problem that must be addressed with serious reform of entitlement and welfare programs while getting the unemployed back to work to fund revenue increases in a positive way.

Best Buy offering preorders for Nokia Lumia 920 and HTC 8X for $14999 and $9999 under contract

Nokia and HTC's upcoming Windows Phone 8 flagships are still on the standard release path: announcement, federal approval and now, pre-order. Keeping device availability tucked firmly under its hat, Best Buy is now offering Nokia's Lumia 920 and the HTC 8X for pre-sale, priced at $149.99 and $99.99, respectively. Early buyers have options, too: the Lumia 920 is kitted out in red, blue, yellow, black and white shells. Fashionistas with a flair for purple, however, will need to stick to HTC's hardware. Unfortunately, you don't get that much choice -- Bust Buy's pre-orders don't balk at the devices' AT&T exclusivity. The retailer doesn't say when devices are going to ship, but we imagine early adopters won't have to wait too long.

?Major errors? lead to retraction of Nature Photonics paper on ...

Maybe it?s an occupational hazard of dealing with quantum physics ? uncertainty and all that ? but a group of Swiss researchers has retracted their paper on quantum dots after discovering ?major errors? that undermined their conclusions.

The article, published in 2010 as a research letter in Nature Photonics, was titled ?Polarization-entangled photons produced with high-symmetry site-controlled quantum dots,? by Eli Kapon and colleagues.

According to the retraction notice:

In this Letter, we claimed the generation of entangled photons from highly symmetric site-controlled pyramidal quantum dots. Apart from the observation of isotropic emission and the measurement of a vanishing fine-structure splitting of 0 ?eV ? 2 ?eV, a fidelity of >0.5 was obtained by using the density matrix derived from quantum state tomography of 16 different polarization-resolved correlation measurements. After further investigation of the second-order correlation functions, g(2)(?), major errors were found and the best fidelity found is now 0.45 for a gate width of 0.225 ns. As a result, we can no longer claim emission of polarization-entangled photons. We therefore wish to retract this Letter and sincerely apologize for any adverse consequence that may have resulted from the paper?s publication.

The paper has been cited 69 times, according to Thomson Scientific?s Web of Knowledge. We note that the researchers, who announced their Nature Photonics paper in a brief press release on their website, had a very similar paper in IEEE Xplore, which appears to be conference submission. That work does not appear to have been retracted.

Kapon, a prominent scientist, is director of the Laboratory of Physics of Nanostructures at the Federal Institutes of Technology in Lausanne (one of two such institutes there). He also is listed as being the founder of a company called BeamExpress,

a privately held company developing in cooperation with the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL) advanced long wavelength Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers (VCSELs) with wavelengths ranging from 1200nm to 1650nm, for application in high-speed optical communications.

We?re not sure what ?adverse consequences? might have come from the publication of this letter, but we agree with move to retract rather than issue a ?mega correction? to try to patch up the tattered analysis.

Meeting Christ in the Liturgy: Sunday 29B: "let us hold fast to our ...

Many families endure the phenomenon of the child comes home only for meals, or for laundry or other physical necessities.? Some see their children come home unexpectedly after college while facing unavailability of work.

This certainly satisfies need for physical sustenance and, although a limited opportunity for interrelationships, is ultimately not enough to satisfy the need for human flourishing.? Why?? Because relationships are about love and love is about growth and growth is about not being satisfied with the minimum.? So sooner or later something has to give: eventually ?persons drift out of relationships because the minimalistic approach is tolerated until it becomes merely an inconvenience to be avoided or the truth is faced and steps are taken to address the dysfunction and matters begin to improve as persons become more generous with their time.

It is true that the Sacrifice of the Mass is the one essential thing: Christ Present in Word proclaimed and really, truly in the Sacrament of the Eucharist.

But it is not the only thing.

In the Gospel the Apostles make demands upon Jesus: "Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you."? Their relationship is tending toward the physical, the utilitarian, much like te son or daughter whose actions tend to reduce the relationship with family members to the satisfaction of physical needs only.

Faith is about what God does for us.? But it is also about what we do for God: grace builds on nature.? So God redirects our attention to the choices we make, the way in which our lives are lived in preparation, readiness for His grace we desire:

?Rather, whoever wishes to be great among you will be your servant; whoever wishes to be first among you will be the slave of all.?

?Thus, if we desire to have Him moving in our lives we must take the first step so that grace can build on nature: we attend Mass weekly in obedience to the Commandments but moreso that we may grow in our relationship.? Mass, although the greatest and necessary gift, remains a minimum, conformity with His command while seeking to grow in our capacity to please God in other ways.?? More is needed.

1.???? ?Daily prayer.

2.???? Scripture reading / study of teachings (CCC)

3.???? Service of others to see and love Christ in them (family, co-workers, the other in distressing disguise)

4.???? Seeking more than the minimum: personal prayer through visits to the Blessed Sacrament, daily Mass, stations during Lent, special liturgies such as Corpus Christi procession and May devotions.

5.???? Regular confession, especially in case of mortal sin before receiving the Eucharist.

?? let us hold fast to our confession ? ? with Sunday Mass is the source of our spiritual life throughout the week and the summit toward which all our activities tend (Vatican II, Sacrosanctum Concilium)

?So let us confidently approach the throne of grace to receive mercy and to find grace for timely help.?

Mysterious X-37B Military Space Plane's Next Secret Mission Delayed

The U.S. Air Force's launch of the next secret mission by its unmanned X-37B space plane has been officially delayed to mid-November.

The upcoming X -37B space plane mystery mission, also known as Orbital Test Vehicle-3 (OTV-3), was slated to blast off atop an Atlas 5 rocket on Oct. 25 from Space Launch Complex 41 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. The liftoff is now scheduled for Nov. 13, according to ULA.

The delay was announced Saturday (Oct. 20) in an update by the mission's launch provider, United Launch Alliance (ULA). ULA officials said an engine glitch during an Oct. 5 launch of a Delta 4 rocket that successfully orbited a Global Positioning System 2F-3 satellite.

An unexpected lower than normal chamber pressure was observed on the booster?s RL10 upper stage engine. The onboard inertial guidance and flight control systems compensated for the lower thrust, with the Delta second stage placing the spacecraft into the proper orbit.

Accident investigation board

While the Atlas 5 being readied to hurl the OTV-3 into Earth orbit utilizes a different model of the Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne RL-10 engine, both the Air Force and ULA concurred on the launch postponement.

Air Force Space Command Commander, General William Shelton, asked for a discretionary accident investigation board (AIB) to investigate why the Delta 4 RL-10B-2 upper stage engine did not perform as expected. Per standard processes, the Air Force reviews all flight data to determine readiness to proceed with the next liftoff.

The space plane delay will allow an additional two weeks for an AIB to probe why the upper stage engine did not perform as expected and enable a "thorough crossover assessment" for the OTV-3 Atlas 5 501 booster to be certified for launch, ULA stated. [Photos: The X-37B Space Plane Unmasked]

Formed in December 2006, ULA is a 50-50 joint venture owned by Lockheed Martin and The Boeing Company. ULA provides the expendable Atlas and Delta boosters for U.S. government launch customers including the Department of Defense, NASA, the National Reconnaissance Office and other organizations.

Reusable space test platform

When the OTV-3 mission lifts off, it will mark the 34th Atlas 5 rocket launch since its inaugural launch in 2002. Atlas 5 vehicles also launched the OTV-1 AND OTV-2 missions.

This third mission of the winged X-37B spacecraft also marks the first re-flight of the reusable space plane. The same vehicle flew the first flight in 2010. That maiden journey of the unpiloted space plane lasted 225 days, zooming in on autopilot over the Pacific Ocean and gliding down onto a specially prepared runway at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California.

Similarly, a second X-37B spacecraft flew on the OTV-2 mission, making a touchdown at Vandenberg?on June 16 of this year. The second mission remained in orbit for 469 days, more than doubling the 225-day mission of its sister ship.

The two space planes are built by Boeing Government Space Systems. They are each 29 feet (8.8 meters) long and 15 feet (4.5 m) wide, with a payload bay about the size of a pickup truck bed.

Classified payloads

Exactly what payloads have been, and will be, flown inside the space plane?s cargo bay is classified.

Flights of the X-37B are conducted under the auspices of the Air Force?s Rapid Capabilities Office which has a mission of expediting the development and fielding of select Department of Defense combat support and weapon systems by leveraging defense-wide technology development efforts and existing operational capabilities.

According to an Air Force factsheet, the Rapid Capabilities Office is working on the X-37B Orbital Test Vehicle ?to demonstrate a reliable, reusable, unmanned space test platform for the United States Air Force.?

There has been discussion of landing the X-37B space plane on the space shuttle runway at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. However, it?s early in the process for those considerations, USAF Major Tracy Bunko at the Pentagon?s Air Force Press desk told SPACE.com.

Leonard David has been reporting on the space industry for more than five decades. He is a winner of last year's National Space Club Press Award and a past editor-in-chief of the National Space Society's Ad Astra and Space World magazines. He has written for SPACE.com since 1999.

Olympus SP-620UZ

In many ways, the SP-620UZ ($199.99 direct) is similar to another Olympus superzoom, the 24x SZ-12 . Both cameras produce solid images at lower ISO settings, suffer at higher settings, and are limited to 720p video capture. The SZ-12 is a bit smaller, and is a slightly better camera overall, but fans of AA batteries, and the flexibility they can bring, will want to opt for the SP-620UZ. Neither camera can compete with our Editors' Choice superzoom, the Nikon Coolpix P510 , but that camera costs more than twice as much.

Design and Features
The SP-620UZ is just 2.9 by 4.3 by 2.9 inches (HWD), but is pretty heavy for its size at 15.3 ounces. It's not pocketable, but is tiny compared with some other superzoom models like the huge Fujifilm X-S1. That SLR-sized shooter packs a slightly more ambitious 26x zoom lens, but comes in at 4.2 by 5.3 by 5.9 inches in size and weighs 2.1 pounds.

The 21x zoom lens covers a 25-525mm field of view, an impressive feat for a camera of this size. Zoom is controlled electronically, and the action is quick and smooth. You'll use the rear LCD to frame and review images, and it's one of the weaker spots of the camera. It's big at 3 inches, but the low 230k-dot resolution makes it difficult to get a good idea of what your photos will look like. The pop-up flash is controlled manually?just flip it up with your finger when you want to use it, and close it when you don't.

The camera itself has a deep grip that accommodates the four AA batteries that power it. It doesn't extend out from the body quite as much as the lens. Controls are fairly minimal?there's a Power button on the top plate, situated a bit behind the zoom rocker and shutter control. There are only a couple buttons around back?Record, Play, Menu, OK, and Help. A four-way controller surrounds the OK button; it's used to navigate through the on-screen menu that gives you access to shooting controls.

Advanced shooters won't want to consider this camera, as there are no Manual, Aperture Priority, or Shutter Priority modes available. There is a Program mode, in addition to iAuto and Scene Modes. You can adjust Exposure Compensation and White Balance in Program, but not much else. There are also the standard Sports, Fireworks, Cuisine, Portrait, Landscape, and similar scene modes. Perhaps in an attempt to keep up with the latest Internet pet photo trends, Olympus has added separate settings for dog and cat face detection?satisifying cat lovers and dog shamers alike. There are also in-camera art filters, a panorama mode, and the now-standard 3D capture mode

An on-screen Guide mode helps casual photographers get the best photos possible. You can page through common questions, like "Why are my pictures blurry?" and the camera will adjust settings to address the issue.

Performance and ConclusionsOlympus SP-620UZ : Benchmark Tests
The SP-620UZ performs quite admirably, especially considering its low price. It starts and shoots in 1.9 seconds and records a short 0.2-second shutter lag. Its shot-to-shot time is 1.3 seconds at full resolution, but it can capture 5-megapixel images at about 4.6 frames per second, and 3-megapixel shots at an impressive 14.9fps. It's actually a better performer than our Editors' Choice compact superzoom Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX30V , which takes 2.3 seconds to start and notches a 0.3-second shutter lag, and its 10fps full-resolution capture mode is limited to a burst of 10 shots.

I used Imatest to check the sharpness of the SP-620UZ's lens. The results were impressive?it manages 2,365 lines per picture height, which is well in excess of the 1,800-line score that denotes a sharp photo. It didn't fare as well in terms of image noise?its CCD sensor could only keep noise below 1.5 percent through ISO 400, and even at that setting the detail of photos was noticeably degraded. It does a much better job at noise control than another AA-battery-powered CCD superzoom, the Canon PowerShot SX150 IS??its photos are noisy at ISO 100.

Video recording is a weak point. The quality is limited to 720p30 in MP4 format, and the camera is incapable of zooming in or out while recording footage. You'll need to set the desired focal length prior to hitting the record button. The camera does a good job refocusing during recording, but the footage itself has a grainy look?even under bright studio lights. There is a micro HDMI port to connect to an HDTV, as well as a proprietary USB port. Standard SD, SDHC, and SDXC memory cards are supported.

The Olympus SP-620UZ is a mixed bag. Image quality in good light is great for a point-and-shoot camera. Its speed and long zoom range add value, but it lacks many of the advanced features found in more expensive competitors. If you're looking for a superzoom, but don't want to spend a ton of money?and you prefer a camera that uses AA batteries?it's a solid choice. If you prefer a rechargeable battery, the Olympus SZ-12 sells for around the same price, and is a slightly more capable camera that will slide into your pocket.

A Golf Cart Has Many Alternative Uses

The golf cart has long proven very convenient on the golf course for a very long time. However, a golf course is not the only venue that can benefit from the four-wheeled, open-air vehicles. Golf carts could be a way to improve the level of fun at your favorite recreation spots.

Anyone who has hit the greens before knows that a golf bag can be a heavy, but they are necessary part of the game. Fortunately, the vast majority of courses in this country offer carts that can be rented by the round and make transportation of the burdensome bags much more manageable. However, these carts have begun to serve many other purposes in recent decades, as the market has found a wide variety of needs could be met with the simplistic motor vehicle.

Outdoor sports

The great outdoors offers numerous options for fun and adventure, but it certainly can be wide open. When you must cover many acres for hunting, fishing, camping, and other such activities a golf cart can be a very handy device to have on hand. Not only can it ensure your legs remain rested for a day full of fun, but it can also help with the transportation of gear. When you have to make a quick trip back to the car, when you need to catch up youre your hunting or fishing partner, when you need to carry the coolers back and forth from camp to waterfront, or even when you need to move your kill, acustom golf cart can be the perfect vehicle. Lifted carts are larger with sturdier wheels meant for rough terrain.

Generally, these carts are built to hold two or four passengers and can even manage light towing. They can be outfitted with covers for a warmer ride, as well as storage racks on the back. In addition, brush guards, headlights, and battery capacity indicators are often included in these models. Better yet, they come in a wide variety of colors, including camouflage for masked travel in the woods and they travel without the noise of ATVs.

On the Water

Whether living on the pond, lake, or river, it can be very convenient and entertaining to have a mode of transportation nearby. Traditional golf carts can easily maneuver through the backyard along nearby trails or to and from neighboring properties when visits are requested. They can be further customized for additional seating or built to act as more of a golf beer cart, keeping refreshments cold and easy at hand.

On the Farm

Hobby farmers will delight at the ease of getting around, from pasture to barn and back, while hauling hay, feed, or even an injured pet. Golf carts, as mentioned above, are much quieter than many of the All Terrain Vehicles on the market, so there is less risk of frightening skittish animals, as well.

Large Party Transport

Are you entertaining at a park or other large grounds? Mobile hospitality carts can make guests more comfortable as they move from parking lot to entertainment site, as also as they mingle with friends or family. This type of service can also be very favorable at hotel pools and entertainment venues as well, where guests appreciate drinks and food coming to them. Golf beverage carts can be made just to carry the goods or adapted to cart people as well.

Correction: Earns-Select Comfort story

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) ? In a story Oct. 17 about Select Comfort's Corp.'s earnings, The Associated Press reported erroneously that the company expects fourth-quarter sales to grow at least 20 percent, which would result in 2012 revenue of about $927.3 million. The correct full-year sales amount is $941.4 million.

A corrected version of the story is below:

Select Comfort shares slip on plans for bigger spending

Select Comfort beats in 3Q, raises full-year forecast but shares dip on plans for bigger investments in 4th quarter

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) ? Select Comfort Corp.'s shares slipped in after-hours trading Wednesday despite the mattress company beating analyst estimates and raising its full-year forecast.

Select Comfort, known for its Sleep Number beds, said that its third-quarter profit increased by 52 percent on stronger sales. It also raised its full-year outlook. But revenue guidance was slightly shy of market expectations and President and CEO Shelly Ibach said that the company would bump up spending in the fourth quarter to promote its brand to customers and develop markets. Shares dipped 4 percent in aftermarket trading.

Mattress makers have grown intensely competitive in recent years as consumers curbed big-ticket spending. However, Select Comfort has used new products, aggressive marketing and added stores to get an edge. This is the second time that the company has raised its full-year forecast.

Select Comfort made $26.2 million, or 46 cents per share, in the quarter that ended Sept. 29. That's up from $17.2 million, or 31 cents per share, in the same quarter last year. Revenue increased 24 percent to $246.8 million.

Analysts expected the company to earn 41 cents per share on revenue of $244.9 million, according to FactSet.

Select Comfort said revenue from stores open at least a year increased 21 percent as more shoppers spent more in its stores. That is a key indicator of a retailer's financial performance because it strips away the impact of recently opened or closed stores.

The company operated 394 stores nationwide at the end of the quarter and expects to have as many as 412 by the end of the year.

Select Comfort expects to earn $1.51 to $1.53 per share for the year on an adjusted basis, well above the $1.41 expected by analysts. The company sees total sales growth for the fourth quarter of at least 20 percent. That would bring full-year sales to about $941.4 million, just shy of the $946.4 million that analysts have forecast for the year.

Shares of Select Comfort rose 43 cents to close at $32.63. They fell $1.23 to $31.40 in after-hours trading.

Data Rescue PC3

Data Rescue PC3 brings to the Windows universe the same high-powered data-recovery technology that makes Prosoft's Data Rescue 3 the leading recovery software for the Mac. Compared with other Windows-based data-recovery apps I reviewed recently?Active@ File Recovery for Windows, Stellar Phoenix Windows Data Recovery, and OnTrack Easy Recovery Pro?Data Rescue PC3 ranks high enough to share our Editor's Choice ranking with OnTrack Easy Recovery Pro. It doesn't match OnTrack's feature set, but it recovers lost files quickly and reliably, and it has one major advantage that the other apps don't: it ships on a bootable CD. This means you can boot from the CD to recover files when you can't boot from your hard disk. And even if your system boots normally, you might prefer to run the app from the CD to avoid the possibility that you'll overwrite a lost file by installing the app to your hard disk.

Getting Started
In its basic operation, Data Rescue PC3 resembles other recovery apps. Compared to rival products, its interface is better suited to non-professional users, but you'll still need a basic understanding of the difference between a physical disk and the partitions (essentially, drives identified by drive letters) that a physical disk can contain. A wizard-style series of dialogs lets you select a drive or partition from which you want to recover files. The same dialogs provide a directory tree that lists every existing file on your disk, in case you're trying to recover one or more files a damaged or unbootable disk.

An advanced feature, for tech professionals only, lets you add driver software needed for reading RAID and other multi-disk storage units. After selecting a drive or partition, the program scans your disk in a process that can take anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours, depending on the size and technology of the drive. The app needed only about ten minutes to scan an 80GB SSD but more than an hour to scan a conventional 1GB disk.

After scanning, the app displays its list of found files in a tree-structured list that's organized according to file types such as Pictures and Documents, not according to the actual directory tree of your disk. This makes it easy to find files of specific types such as DOCX or PNG. At this point you can select one or all files to save to a directory or drive that you specify. Or if you want to check out whether a file is fully recoverable, you can right-click on it, choose View from the menu, and open the file in your system's default program for that file type?for example, Adobe Reader for PDF files.

My Results
I tried out Data Rescue PC3 on an SSD drive where I had deleted dozens of files either from the Windows command prompt or from other programs that don't send delete files to the Recycle Bin where it's easy to recover them. After I scanned the drive, and set the app's file filters to show only deleted files, I got a clear list of the files I had deleted. I restored them to a different drive, and here's where I discovered that the app produced mixed results?though the results were effectively the same as the results I got when I tried the same scenario with OnTrack Easy Recovery Pro.

Most of my files were fully recovered, but until I opened each one in turn, I couldn't identify which ones had not been recovered even though the program said they were. (Instead of the file I wanted, the program had "recovered" a file with nothing in it.) In every case, these un-recovered files were fairly large files that had presumably been fragmented on my disk, and the recovery software had no way of knowing how to put together the various fragments. This situation is more likely to occur on SSDs than traditional platter-style disks, since SSDs deliberately store large files in multiple fragments?unlike traditional disks where there's a definite speed benefit to keeping a complete file in one place.

Tied for Tops
It probably won't matter to most users that Data Rescue PC3 doesn't have all the options available in data-recovery software from OnTrack, Active@, or Stellar Phoenix. For example, it doesn't have an option to make a "quick scan" instead of a standard, deep scan, and it doesn't try to recover data from optical disks. But it does include the drive-cloning feature found in all its rivals, so that you can try to copy data from a physically-failing drive to backup media and recover files from there. And, most of all, it comes on a bootable CD, so it's ready for action when your system won't boot at all. Data Rescue PC3 has much of the power built into OnTrack Easy Recovery Pro and it's easier for non-professionals to use. If you haven't already equipped yourself with a data recovery app, in case of emergency, this is one that's worth buying now so you'll have it when you need it.
