Final exam information and virtual office hours? - Business Risk ...

As soon as I get done writing the final exam, I will post a blog entry in which I provide helpful hints for studying.

The exam is scheduled for December 10, 9:00-11:00 a.m. in Cashion 306. Between now and then, if you have any course-related questions or concerns, free to call me at 254-307-1317 during normal business hours (i.e., between the hours of 9-5). Thanks to Google Voice, this number rings at my home office in Austin, my cellphone, and my Baylor office, so I am really easy to get hold of. In the unlikely event that you get voice mail, just leave your name, number, and time of your call, and I?ll get back to you as soon as possible.

I hope to see some of you at the seminar tomorrow. Should be very interesting! Sic em, Bears!

RIM stock rises after Goldman Sachs upgrade

TORONTO (AP) ? Research In Motion rose Thursday after Goldman Sachs upgraded the phone maker's shares, saying there's a "30 percent chance" RIM's much-delayed BlackBerry 10 smartphones will be a success.

THE SPARK: Goldman Sachs analyst Simona Jankowski lifted RIM to "Buy" from "Neutral," the latest analyst to voice a slightly more optimistic view for the troubled company. Goldman lifted its 12-month price target to $16 from $9.

THE BIG PICTURE: RIM was once Canada's most valuable company, with a market value of more than $80 billion in 2008, but shares have sunk due to ground lost to Apple Inc.'s iPhone and phones running Google Inc.'s Android system.

Now the company's new BlackBerrys, expected sometime after Jan. 30, are considered critical to its survival. The new system includes a touch screen and the apps experience that customers now expect.

THE ANALYSIS: Jankowski noted positive early reviews for the new operating system and broad-based support by carriers who are looking to sell a third operating system beyond Google's Android and Apple's iOS.

She predicted that RIM will become profitable in the year ending in February 2014. Analysts polled by FactSet expect a loss. Still, she expects RIM to revert to a loss the next year.

Last week, National Bank Financial Kris Thompson increased his price target to $15 from $12, while Jefferies analyst Peter Misek doubled his price target from $5 to $10, saying the BlackBerry 10 operating system has a 20 to 30 percent chance of succeeding.

SHARE ACTION: Shares of Research In Motion added 67 cents, or 6.4 percent, to $11.77 in midday trading on the Nasdaq. The stock is up 78 percent since late September ? but it's down 23 percent this year through Wednesday's close, and has lost more than 90 percent from its 2008 high.

From Partners to Parents: Showing CARE | World of Psychology

From Partners to Parents: Showing CAREDiscussing and exploring the well-being of one?s partnership isn?t often on the list of baby preparation to-dos. After all, pregnancy can be a joyful time ? one that elicits feelings of anticipation, newness, and excitement. Immersed in the pregnant possibilities of motherhood, energy focuses on what will be gained by starting a family. Baby showers mark this time by gifting the family with the necessary gear to outwardly navigate and welcome this new life.

?Get a lot of sleep.? ?Go see a lot of movies.? ?Take a Babymoon.?

When advice is offered, it often centers around the notion that couples can prematurely fill up their well-being reservoirs, meeting needs that won?t be fulfilled for a while postpartum, as if these can be stored in the ?happiness? hump of marital satisfaction.

While these are all wonderful suggestions, highlighting the changes couples are about to experience, they ignore the emotional preparation that so often helps pave the way for the passage to parenthood.

During such an expansive time, couples rarely consider the more stressful ways their partnership may be affected once the baby arrives. Transitioning from being partners to becoming parents is an enormous identity change, and this is not always easy.

Surviving and adjusting to the early days of parenting exposes one?s relationship foundation at its very core. Once baby arrives, approximately two-thirds of couples report a change in the quality of their partnership. Between sleep deprivation, diaper changes, and feedings, the day-to-day routine of caring for a baby suddenly revolves around negotiating. When this is not discussed in advance, it can quickly turn into ?keeping score? of who?s doing what and who?s doing more. With less time for adult conversation, date nights, and self-care, emotional distance can develop.

So how can partners emotionally prepare for the baby?s arrival?

To help couples connect and communicate, I developed the acronym CARE. CARE highlights concrete topics for couples to discuss and explore before the baby arrives. By engaging in a thoughtful discussion, couples can build awareness around relationship self-care and well-being, and in doing so support each other in the new days of parenting. Examples for each part of the acronym are given below:

?After our daughter was born, and once my husband returned to work, it was hard to find time to talk and connect, just the two of us. I missed our partnership as a twosome and felt really lonely being in ?baby world? all day long.?

C: Communication. Once baby arrives, finding time to talk and connect is challenging. With a range of new emotions, some of which are difficult, setting boundaries around communication is helpful. For example, couples may agree not to address hard or hurtful feelings at midnight, or in between diaper changes. When discussing difficult topics, using ?I? statements is a simple, but effective way to share one?s feelings and instill empowerment around communicating them.

?Post-baby, we came home from the hospital, and felt this enormous sadness about how much our lives had changed. I missed having time to meet daily necessities like showering and eating with two hands. My husband missed downtime after work and on the weekends. The shock of being parents surprised us. We felt like we had to mourn our old lives in order to accept our new ones.?

A: Acceptance. Myriad transitions are under way during pregnancy and during the postpartum period. Welcoming the baby and adjusting to the ?new nest? often means acknowledging what has changed, accepting each moment just as it is, and realizing it is temporary. Sometimes, this means grieving what has been lost with regard to individual identity in order to make room for what has emerged.

?All of our family lives far away. In preparing for the baby, we had to think about who could help us with day-to-day errands and meal preparation. Our midwife gave us great advice and helped us connect with a postpartum doula and a food delivery service.?

R: Resources. In preparing for the early days with the baby, it is helpful to think of who will support you. It?s often a good idea to create a list or calendar of anticipated daily needs, as well as who might be available to help with those needs. Local hospitals and mothers groups often offer a range of new mom/parent support groups, classes, and even meal preparation services that can help ease the transition.

?In the new days, everyone asked us if we loved being parents and commented with questions posed as statements, ?isn?t it exciting? While it was exciting, it was also terrifying. I wish someone could have connected with us around the scary feelings.?

E: Empathy. While a shared journey, the evolution of parenthood may involve separate paths. Parents are sometimes on different emotional timelines as they navigate, integrate, and make meaning of their new identities. Having compassion and making room for any and all feelings that emerge helps couples join hands during this transition, and creates a strong emotional base for which to raise a child.

For any mother- or father-to-be, becoming a parent brings a tidal wave of unexpected feelings, normal insecurities, and new opportunities. Adjusting to this new identity offers the opportunity to deepen your relationship with your partner, internally expand and embrace the teachable moments of raising a child. Intimacy and connection can become richer as a result of this process. Often, it is making and taking time to talk about the hard things even when there is no perfect solution.

(AP) ? You remember that Beatles classic "I Wanna Hold Your Hand"? Turns out Yoko Ono had other things in mind.

Ono's new menswear collection inspired by John Lennon includes pants with large handprints on the crotch, tank tops with nipple cutouts and even a flashing LED bra.

The collection of menswear for Opening Ceremony is based on a series of drawings she sketched as a gift for Lennon for their wedding day in 1969. Ono said she the illustrations were designs for clothing and accessories to celebrate Lennon's "hot bod."

Also in the collection are a "butt hoodie" with an outline drawing suggesting its name, pants with cutouts at the behind, a jock strap with an LED light and a transparent chest plaque with bells and a leather neck strap.

"I was inspired to create 'Fashions for Men,' amazed at how my man was looking so great. I felt it was a pity if we could not make clothes emphasizing his very sexy bod," Ono said in a statement. "So, I made this whole series with love for his hot bod, and gave it to him as a wedding present."

Opening Ceremony hosted a book signing at its SoHo store for Ono for a book that contained the illustrations, and that led to the collaboration to bring them to life. The limited-edition capsule collection, "Fashions for Men: 1969-2002," launched on Tuesday.

"As huge, longtime fans of Yoko's art, we have great respect for her artistic vision, aesthetics, and intellect," said Humberto Leon, co-founder and creative director of Opening Ceremony.

Prices run from $25 for a poster to $200 for a jock strap or $750 for boots with an incense holder or open toes.

New research in The FASEB Journal suggests that daily exposure to low magnitude mechanical signals partially rescues B- and T-cell populations damaged by obesity and the resulting harm to the immune system

Bethesda, MDIf you're looking to get some of the benefits of exercise without doing the work, here's some good news. A new research report published online in The FASEB Journal shows that low-intensity vibrations led to improvements in the immune function of obese mice. If the same effect can be found in people, this could have clinical benefits for obese people suffering from a wide range of immune problems related to obesity.

"This study demonstrates that mechanical signals can help restore an immune system compromised by obesity," said Clinton Rubin, Ph.D., study author from the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Stony Brook University in Stony Brook, New York. "While it is well known that obesity can cripple many physiologic systems, this work suggests that mechanical signalsin the absence of drugscan help combat this disease and its sequelae. That these mechanical signals are so brief, and so mild, is further evidence of how exquisitely tuned our body is to external signals, and that remaining activeclimbing stairs at work, taking a walk at lunch, standing while reading a bookwill help achieve and retain good health. Stand up!"

To make this discovery, Rubin and colleagues fed a group of adult mice a high fat diet for seven months to make them obese. At the end of this first phase of the experiment, the damage to the immune and skeletal systems of the obese mice was significant, decreasing B- and T-cell populations in the blood, and markedly accelerating the loss of bone. The second phase began after the mice were obese relative to regular controls, with the creation of a sub-group that was subjected to daily 15-minute bouts of low-intensity vibration, barely perceptible to human touch. Results showed that the vibration intervention helped to rescue both the immune and skeletal systems, returning them toward outcomes measured in mice that were fed a regular diet. This study provides evidence that obesity markedly reduces the production of B- and T-cells and that brief daily exposure to low magnitude mechanical signals rescues B- and T-cell populations, even in a mouse that is already obese.

"This solid support for a shaky intervention should get scientists and health care professionals buzzing," said Gerald Weissmann, M.D., Editor-in-Chief of The FASEB Journal. "If it works out in people, low intensity vibration could be a relatively cheap way of helping obese folks regain health without drugs - until they lose weight by diet and exercise."

The Davidson Family - Party of Five: I Have the Perfect Gift for You

Once a year my mom and I wake up in the dark of the night and we sneak out of the house.? It?s tradition.? We?ve planned out the details the night before.? We?ve made a list of places we?ll go.? With our purses in tow, we gently close the door behind us and quietly roll out of the driveway, so as not to wake the children or men.?

Are you wondering where such wild women of the night are headed?? For some, the answer is as plain as daybreak: the Black Friday sales, of course!? That?s right, every year my mom and I join the masses and spend the entire day wandering about, chatting and laughing, until our feet hurt and the guilt of staying out too long sends us staggering home.? And every year, to nobody?s surprise, we come home almost empty-handed.? We?re not disappointed.? We know that?s the way it will turn out before we even start planning.? The reasons are simple.? We don?t need anything.? We can hardly think of a thing to buy anyone.? We already have too much.

If you can relate - you have a list of people you?d like to give a gift to but are tired of buying more stuff just to buy more stuff - I have the perfect gift for you!? No waiting in lines, no returns necessary, no making room in the closet or cupboard, no wrapping paper, no second guessing, no shipping, and one size fits all.? It?s a card, one that will help build a school for hundreds of orphaned and destitute children in Ethiopia.

Kind Hearts, a Children?s HopeChest CarePoint, in Ethiopia is currently serving more than 200 children.? The CarePoint provides them with nutritious food, clean water, clothing, medical care, education, and Christian discipleship.? For these kids, it is, no doubt, a complete life changer.? However, they are serving a greater number of children than they have room for, and still many more watch from a distance, waiting and wishing for the day there is room for them.? Plans are underway to build a new school building which will DOUBLE the number of children they are able to serve.? Would you consider making their wish a reality by sending this card to someone on your list this Christmas?
KindHearts Christmas Card
Giving a gift in someone?s honor is incredibly meaningful. It says, ?I know you appreciate the significance of a good thing.? If you ask me about gifts I?ve received in the past, these are the gifts I remember. The simplicity of sending this card to family and friends can help improve the lives of hundreds of children for a lifetime. That?s a worthy gift.

If you?d like to cross a few things off your list and send a gift that truly exemplifies the spirit of Christmas, here?s how you can do it:

Option 1:? Use the PayPal button to the left.? First, select the amount of your gift.? Next, enter the names you would like listed on the ?To? and ?From? lines, and the recipient?s address (where you would like the card sent.)? Be sure to separate your information with commas.? Repeat for each card you would like to send.

Option 2:? Make your donation directly to Children?s HopeChest using the following link: Children?s HopeChest.? You will need to enter reference number ET2110000 and then specify KH Christmas Card in the notes area.? Send me an e-mail at davidsonfamilystl@sbcglobal.net with the recipient?s name and address.? Be sure to let me know how you would like me to fill in the ?To? and ?From? lines on the card.? If you would like to send multiple cards, you can make one donation and send one e-mail.? I am asking a minimum donation of $10/card.? Please include the amount of your gift, so I? will be able to share updates about the progress being made.

Because we will send absolutely 100% of your donation to Children?s HopeChest for the school building project, my husband?s Christmas gift to me is as many cards as you will order. (Guess what he?s getting?? Postage for as many cards as you will order :)

All cards will be addressed by hand and mailed on December 12. If you would like to have your card mailed sooner, just let me know what day. If you would like multiple cards sent to your home address so that you or your child can hand deliver them, let me know how many to send. If you have any questions, just send me an e-mail.? Definitely stop back for updates!

For more information on Kind Hearts, please visit my friend Karen Wistrom?s blog, http://www.family-from-afar.blogspot.com/.

When you gather the profits of your hard work, leave some for the foreigner, the orphans, and the widows.? Then the Lord, your God, will bless you in all you do.? Deuteronomy 24:19.

Bentley Ponders Future of Speed at GT3 Sneak Peek

Bentley plans to officially unveil their Continental GT-based race car concept at the LA Auto Show, but the Crewe-based manufacturer offered a sneak peak of the heavily modified GT3 contender to a small crowd of invited attendees at a Hollywood sound stage.

?

Boasting aggressive bodywork and 2,200 pounds of weight loss, the GT3 car makes visual promises that will hopefully translate to race victories for Bentley. Setting the tone was a panel discussion with Motorsports head Brian Gush, World Land Speed Record Holder Andy Green, Motor Trend Editor-at-Large Angus MacKenzie, and Bentley board member Rolf Frech; the proceedings were moderated by racer Justin Bell.

?

The chat touched on everything from the GT3's test schedule to RAF Wing Commander Andy Green's upcoming attempt to break the 1,000 mph barrier, but the real star of the show was the winged race car, which loomed large on the left side of the stage. And while there's nothing wrong with experts talking shop about going fast, nothing quite compares to the thrill of watching a fearsome race car roar past on a track-- which we hope to experience soon with Bentley.

iTunes ? It Goes To 11. (In Design, If Not Performance.)

aYes, that headline. Obvious. But appropriate. Yes, after much delay (about a month), iTunes 11 is here today. And yes, it is one of the biggest overhauls of the media management service yet. Perhaps the biggest. And yes, it is now better positioned to compete in the era of the cloud. And yes, they even made the icon a bit better. It was back at the iPhone 5 event in September, when Apple first previewed the latest version of iTunes, pointing out many of the new/revised features on stage. But how does it hold up in terms of actual usage? Pretty good. Not perfect. But better than any of the previous versions of the software.

Internet Marketing For Traditional Businesses | The Geek Solutions

The recent trend of companies establishing their online presence has far reaching effects on the customer-base. It replaces most of the conventional advertising strategies that were popular some years ago.?

Online presence has now become requisite for a business that aims to carve a niche for itself. A business online can avail of the benefits of several online marketing tools. Thought general search engine optimization (SEO) techniques are adopted, the website is exposed to fluctuating marketing trends online Replacing Old Strategies

Apart from SEO fundamentals for increasing the search rankings of your business, you can make use of the social media networks to increase your customer base. Most traditional businesses have digitized their reach to customers without relying on the old-fashioned ?word of mouth? strategies.

Many SEO experts acknowledge the necessity of innovative methods to improve the successes of businesses online. The algorithm used by major search engines like Google places a heavy emphasis on guest blogging and content marketing. There is a greater need to use the right keywords, interpose them effectively in articles and convey useful content.

Publish an Online Newsletter

You can publish an online newsletter, and send them across to your contacts by email. It is not easier to create and send online newsletters. Newsletter created online exclude overheads like mailing and printing costs. As you only need to focus on the content, it saves you lot of time.

Explore Social Networking Sites

Your presence on social networking sites helps track the responses of your customers to your products or services. You can easily address the concerns of your customers with your products.

Social networking sites are freely available for all and they provide an excellent platform to showcase your products online. ?You could also develop your business by announcing promotional offers online.

Selling Products Online

If you have a large inventory, it might make sense to sell some of the products through an auction site online. In this way, you target even those people who primarily shop over the internet. But exercise your discretion while selling the products online; choose to sell only products that don?t sell easily in your offline store. Learn about strategies to protect you from fraudulent dealings. But selling your goods online is a great way to clear your stocks and raise some quick money.

Key Ingredients for Online Marketing Success

Establish a strong rapport with your long standing customers. Your advertising expenses are reduced when your existing customers spread the credibility of your business. To do this, honor your customers and award them brownie points.

Make sure you deliver good content in a focused way. Introduce offers to grab the notice of existing and prospective customers. Incorporate?copy writing?techniques to enhance the visibility of your business.

Ensure that you have a strong title and support it with informative content. Interpose a ?call to action? in your article to drive customers to initiate an action like: share a link, like a comment or fill a form.

92% Skyfall

All Critics (276) | Top Critics (45) | Fresh (253) | Rotten (23)

'Quantum of Solace,' was a dour, dire letdown. This picture's a substantial bounce back, and easily the best Craig Bond picture. Emotional depth and all.

Sam Mendes' 'Skyfall': sleek, slithery, sensual

The cool accomplishment of Skyfall, 23rd in the Broccoli franchise, is that it seems a necessary, rather than mandatory, addition to the year's popular culture.

Among the most ambitious imaginings of Bond to date: dark, supple, and punctuated with moments of unanticipated visual brilliance.

Mendes' approach to action is classical and elegant - no manic editing and blurry unintelligible images here - but what makes the movie special is the attention he pays his actors.

"Skyfall" is a different kind of Bond movie, one that works just fine on its own terms, but a steady diet of this might kill the franchise. One "Skyfall" is enough.

Sentimental touches underscore the fun and frivolity of Bond's past while relishing the brutal landscape of the modern day super-spy.

This makes the list of truly great 007 films alongside the list of Goldfinger, Thunderball, Live And Let Die, Licence To Kill, Goldeneye and Casino Royale.

Worlds collide in this near-brilliant, meticulously refined 21st-century redefinition of James Bond.

Sam Mendes has done a magnificent job, creating both a relevant and timeless entry into the Bond canon, while deftly adding homages to the series' past.

...tough and grim but still spry ... feels like something of a rearguard action in the case of the British Empire.

Sometimes the old ways are the best. This is a theme and repeated line running throughout the new James Bond film Skyfall and never has it been more true.

Skyfall does what all of the best franchise entries do: it makes you want to see the next one immediately. Consider me (physically) shaken and (emotionally) stirred.

Not the best Bond movie ever but a very good one; a little darker but still unsettled as to what type overall it wants to be.

Too often this martini is sloppy, not smooth.

This is one of the 50-year-old series' most exciting and commandingly compelling entries. Yes, James Bond is back to being James Bond.

Seen against the ineffectual backdrop of 2008's Quantum of Solace, this is a return to form but it doesn't exceed Craig's impressive debut as Bond in 2006's Casino Royale.

Skyfall is not, of course, ''darker'' or more serious than previous Bond films, but it's more knowing about its own conventions.

Breathes fresh life into the genre.

A lot of critics are claiming this to be the best Bond film ever made; they may well be right-to some degree. It's certainly the most poignant-which, in what is ostensibly an action film, is a feather in Mendes' cap to be sure.

James Bond's 23rd official feature film gives the iconic secret agent something to stew over: an existential crisis.

Suffers from unconvincing plotting, and a third act so bad it brings the roof of the whole endeavour caving in

Even die-hard Sean Connery fans will have to admit there's another actor who can portray James Bond when they see 'Skyfall.'

Mendes does a superb job maintaining tension - and releasing it from time to time so we can take a breath, have a laugh, sit back from the edge of our seat - as he shows how seriously the James Bond character can be taken, without breaking it

Establishing a sense of urgency from the outset, the 23rd Bond film hits its tall target with a bonus back-story, character establishment and strong storyline to balance the action. As a consequence, we are offered a film that is uniquely Bond

With Higher Taxes Looming, Bonuses May Come Early - NYTimes ...

Some highly paid workers may be getting an extra Christmas present this year: an early bonus.

Firms in bonus-heavy industries like finance, law and consulting typically pay their annual bonuses after Jan. 1, once the firm?s (and employee?s) previous calendar-year performance can be fully assessed. But now, anticipating higher income tax rates in 2013, some companies have decided to distribute their bonuses by Dec. 31 instead.

At Ares Management, a financial services firm, employees have been told they will receive bonuses in mid-December instead of mid-January. A spokesman for the company declined to comment about its compensation practices.

Paying bonuses early ? not more, not less, just early ? can save high-income employees quite a bit of cash. That is because a series of tax changes scheduled to kick in at the end of the year will cause income received in 2013 to be taxed at higher rates than income received in 2012.

?It?s one of the few things you can do as an employer that?ll make employees happy that doesn?t cost you anything,? said Alan Johnson, managing director of Johnson Associates, a compensation consulting firm.

Mr. Johnson, like other compensation and tax consultants and lawyers interviewed, said he had been receiving a lot of inquiries from firms considering accelerating their bonuses into this year.

?Right after the election, many of our clients started calling saying they were interested in doing this,? said Regina Olshan, a partner in the executive compensation group at the international law firm Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom. So far only a handful have actually decided to give bonuses early, she said, but others may follow suit if Congress marches toward Dec. 31 without voting to undo planned tax increases.

?I can promise you I?ll have calls on Dec. 20 asking, ?Can I accelerate everything in the next two weeks??? she said.

Smaller, privately held firms ? particularly private equity companies, known for their tax-planning acumen ? seem to be taking the biggest interest.

Publicly held companies often have a bigger administrative and legal burden if they change their bonus calendar, especially since many of them have employees abroad under different countries? tax systems. Public companies also appear to be wary of the appearance of lowering their tax bill, even if the actions are completely legal, particularly if they received taxpayer-funded bailouts during the financial crisis.

?There?s so much contemplated regulation in terms of compensation these days,? said Steven G. Eckhaus, a partner at the law firm Katten Muchin Rosenman. ?You can just imagine the public reaction given the fact that bankers are still doing relatively well relative to everyone else. Most people don?t have the luxury of being able to change when they get their compensation, let alone receive that kind of bonus in the first place.?

One of the risks of paying bonuses early is that companies do not know for certain whether they will hit their annual targets, which for accounting, legal and administrative reasons are often supposed to be tied to the bonuses they pay out.

After all, in the last few weeks of the year, clients may not pay, the market may drop precipitously, or some other calamity may arise, and companies have no easy way of clawing back bonuses they have already given out.

At publicly traded companies, if performance-based bonuses are distributed and the company does not hit its targets, the company itself can face adverse tax consequences.

One solution, said Mr. Johnson, is to pay part of the annual bonus before Dec. 31, and then wait to pay the rest of it until after the new year, when the company has had a chance to go over the complete books more thoroughly.

Paying bonuses early can certainly impose administrative headaches.

Even though, for accounting reasons, companies usually know by December roughly how much money they?re going to pay out over all, they usually have not yet determined how that bonus pool will be distributed. At bigger firms, the process for allocating bonuses takes about six weeks, according to James F. Reda, managing director at James F. Reda & Associates, a division of Gallagher Benefit Services.

Usually, accountants and tax lawyers advise their clients to defer as much compensation as possible until after the new year.

That?s partly because there is a chance that their income will fall into a lower tax bracket the following year. Additionally, receiving income on Jan. 1 rather than Dec. 31 also means that they can hold on to their money longer before having to hand over some of it as taxes to the government. Income received on Dec. 31, 2012, is taxed by April 15, 2013; taxes on money received on Jan. 1, 2013, may not be payable in full until April 15, 2014. The taxpayer can use that extra year to invest the money and earn a return on it.

Accountants? and lawyers? advice is different this year because tax rates are expected to rise on Jan. 1, particularly for those with higher incomes.

If tax rates for high earners return to their Clinton-era rates, as President Obama wants, the top marginal income tax rate would rise from 35 percent to 39.6 percent. That may not sound like a big jump, but when you?re talking about large sums of money, the increase can be substantial.

A $1 million bonus taxed at the top marginal rate, for example, would incur an additional $46,000 in taxes ($396,000, instead of $350,000).

And that calculation factors in just one of the tax rates scheduled to rise at the end of the year. Earners in the top brackets are likely be hit with other tax increases in 2013, including the expiration of the payroll tax cut and a new Medicare surtax created by the Affordable Care Act.

Clients have been calling their tax and compensation lawyers about accelerating other forms of income, too. Ms. Olshan said she received a call from a client who expected to be fired next year and wanted to know about requesting severance early.

Compensation lawyers and consultants noted that companies have received ?false alarms? about Washington?s plans to raise taxes in the past, so companies may be dragging their feet about speeding up the bonus cycle this year.

?This is about the fourth time we?ve gone through this tax scare, where people say there?s some catastrophic tax thing coming,? Mr. Johnson said. As a result, he thinks most firms will not revise their bonus calendars. ?Some may regret it deeply in a few months, but I think most won?t get around to it.?

Ronda Rousey: ?I try to have as much sex as possible before I fight?

UFC/Strikeforce women's bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey appeared on Jim Rome's show on Wednesday. What does the champion use as her training secret? Does she have high-level training methods not available to amateur athletes and workout warriors?

Nope. She likes to have as much sex as possible before fights. Though Mick advised Rocky that women weaken the legs, Rousey believes it has the opposite effect on women.

"For girls it raises your testosterone, so I try to have as much sex as possible before I fight actually. Not with like everybody, I don't put out like a Craigslist ads or anything, but if I got a steady I'm going to be like, 'Yo, fight time's coming up,'" Rousey said.

It clearly works for her. Rousey has steamrolled every opponent she has faced on her way to the championship and a 6-0 record. She's won every fight with a first-round submission, and she recently was named the first woman in the UFC. Though her opponent and the date for her first UFC fight are currently unknown, UFC president Dana White said her bout will be a main event on a pay-per-view.

Rousey is also a two-time Olympian, and she won a bronze medal for judo in 2008. It was a fight before the Beijing Olympics that made her think she could be successful in the cage.

"Yes. I got in a fight with a couple of guys at the end of 2007 in a movie theater. It was four couples so four guys and one girl tried to get into it. And I had two friends with me. But I was only really handling two guys by myself. They sued me for assault because it didn't really go too well for them. I guess if you lose a fight in Santa Monica the next option is to sue. Everyone in the theater was cheering for me. I was thinking I might have a future in this. It was before the whole MMA thing."

Defining the art of putting

(AP Photo/Chuck Burton, File)

(AP) ? Webb Simpson and Keegan Bradley, two of the major faces in the debate over belly putters, said Tuesday they would not fight a change in the rules if golf's governing bodies decide to outlaw putters anchored to the body.

That doesn't mean they're in favor of a ban.

"I'm obviously not happy with the ruling, but I respect the USGA, and especially Mike Davis," Bradley said. "They make the rules, and I'll adjust appropriately. But I'm going to accept the challenge and hopefully do well when they do ban it."

Davis, the USGA executive director, and Royal & Ancient chief executive Peter Dawson have scheduled a press conference Wednesday morning to announce their conclusions on the future of long putters. All indications point toward a ban on anchoring the club.

At issue is not the putter itself, but whether it can be anchored to the body, such as the stomach (belly putters) or the chest (long putters).

The long putters have been in vogue for the better part of 25 years, though a recent surge in use got the attention of golf's two governing bodies. Bradley became the first major champion with a belly putter when he won the PGA Championship last year. Simpson won the U.S. Open using a belly putter, and Ernie Els won the British Open with a belly putter, rallying to beat Adam Scott, who uses a long putter he anchors to the top of his chest.

Guan Tianling, the 14-year-old from China, used a belly putter to win the Asia-Pacific Amateur earlier this month to earn a spot in the Masters.

Dawson spoke in July about looking at the anchored putters as a rules issue instead of an equipment issue. If that's the case and it is banned, it would not take effect until 2016 because the Rules of Golf are only updated every four years.

While a change would affect players like the recent major champions, Carl Pettersson and Tim Clark, several others are opposed to putters stuck into the body. They argue it takes away nervous hands and allows for a smoother stroke.

Tiger Woods is opposed to long putters, and he stated his argument clearly on Tuesday.

"I just believe that the art of putting is swinging the club and controlling nerves, and having it as a fixed point ? as I was saying all year ? is something that's not in the traditions of the game," Woods said. "We swing all other 13 clubs. I think the putter should be the same. It should be a swinging motion throughout the entire bag."

Woods said his biggest concern was not so much the major champions, but junior players.

"There have been some guys who had had success out there, and obviously everyone always copies what we out here, and that's something that I think for the greater good of the game needs to be adjusted," he said.

Simpson first switched to a belly putter in 2004 to help with consistency. He found one in a pro shop, gave it a try and noticed immediate improvement. But for all the attention on belly putters, he said it was the accuracy with his driver that helped him win the U.S. Open at Olympic Club this year.

"My argument the whole time is to change something that drastic, it needs to be based off facts and not what certain people think the tradition of the game looks like," Simpson said. "But look, I'm not going to be one of those guys that says this is a terrible decision. I'm just saying to make a change this big, show me the facts. And hey, they're the governing body, so we'll see what happens."

Simpson already has been practicing with a conventional putter, preparing for such a ban. He said if there is a ban, he would use the conventional putter at home, and then in pro-am rounds and make the switch when he's comfortable with it.

"I'm just going to take it one step at a time until my comfort level gets better and better," Simpson said. "If I feel ready by Hyundai (the start of the 2013 season), I'll be putting with a short putter. And if I don't feel ready for two years, I'll wait."

Bradley said he would be in no rush to make the change if there is a ban.

Graeme McDowell and Ian Poulter were among those who lined up against anchored putters earlier this month in Australia. McDowell said the rule should have been changed years ago, and that using an anchored putter "takes one extraneous movement out of the putting stroke," which he feels is an advantage under pressure.

Poulter, as usual, was more blunt.

"Ban it. End of story," Poulter said.

Steve Stricker, regarded as one of the best putters in golf, has picked up a belly putter to see what the rage was all about. And it concerned him.

"It was pretty scary how fast I picked it up, to tell you the truth," Stricker said. "I went and anchored it just right below my sternum. It was a little different feel for me, but I got pretty consistent pretty quick with it. So I can see that there was an advantage, even though I can't see myself ever doing it."

Safer spinach? Scientist's technique dramatically reduces E. coli numbers

ScienceDaily (Nov. 27, 2012) ? University of Illinois scientists have found a way to boost current industry capabilities when it comes to reducing the number of E. coli 0157:H7 cells that may live undetected on spinach leaves.

?By combining continuous ultrasound treatment with chlorine washing, we can reduce the total number of foodborne pathogenic bacteria by over 99.99 percent,? said Hao Feng, a U of I professor of food science and human nutrition.

According to Feng, the USDA is looking for proposed technologies that can achieve a 4 to 6 log reduction in pathogen cells (a 6 log reduction would achieve a million-fold reduction in pathogenic bacteria). The food processing industry can now achieve a 1 log or tenfold reduction. In comparison, the U of I technique yields a 4 log reduction.

?Combining technologies is the key to bridging the gap between our current capacity and what USDA would like to see. The use of ultrasound exposure during chlorine washing gives the industry a way to significantly enhance microbial safety,? he said.

Feng?s pilot-scale system uses three pairs of large-area ultrasonic transducer boxes to form a channel through which ultrasound is provided to spinach leaves that are undergoing a continuous-flow chlorine wash. Spatial uniformity of ultrasound distribution was confirmed by tests using metallic foil.

The scientist said that continuous flow and uniformity of the field are key elements in the success of the process.

?Previous work with ultrasound used a tank or a medical-style probe, which doesn?t provide consistent and even distribution,? he noted.

System design is important for another reason, he said. ?Placement of the produce as it makes its way through the channel turns out to be very important. We had to find ways to make sure that leaves received similar exposure to ultrasound, taking care to minimize the chance that one leaf would block a nearby leaf?s exposure to the sound waves.?

If even part of a leaf escaped the full ultrasonic treatment, it could contaminate the rest of the produce, he said.

Feng and his team have used the technique on iceberg and romaine lettuce as well as spinach with similar results.

Co-authors of the paper, published in Innovative Food Science and Emerging Technologies, are the U of I?s Bin Zhou and Arne J. Pearlstein. Funding was provided by Food Technology Noord-Oost Nederland, with additional support from the USDA.

Hydrogen production: Can cobalt be used to replace platinum?

ScienceDaily (Nov. 27, 2012) ? Researchers at the CEA, CNRS and Joseph Fourier University, in Grenoble and Saclay, have developed two new cobalt-based materials that may be used to replace platinum, a rare and expensive metal, in producing hydrogen from water (electrolysis). One of them works in aqueous solutions with neutral pH . The other is the first catalytic material ever created that is 'commutable' , contains no noble metals and can be used in the two chemical reactions essential for water electrolysis: the production of hydrogen and the production of oxygen.

The results are published in Nature Materials and Nature Chemistry.

Renewable energies (sun and wind, etc.) are primary sources of energy which are irregularly distributed across regions and available only intermittently. For these reasons, it is crucial to develop ways to store the energy produced. Producing hydrogen by water electrolysis is a promising solution, but one that requires catalysts containing 'noble' metals, such as platinum. The fact that such metals are rare and expensive has blocked the sustainable economic development of hydrogen technology.

The bio-inspired chemistry is based on chemical processes that take place in certain living organisms. Such organisms have enzyme systems, called hydrogenases, which make exclusive use of cheap metals found in abundance in nature, which enable them to use hydrogen as a source of energy or to produce hydrogen from water. For many years, the researchers have drawn inspiration from such enzymes to develop new molecular catalysts, without platinum, but based on metals that are both cheap and found in abundance in nature (including iron, nickel, cobalt and manganese).

However, to be able to use these synthetic catalysts in technological developments, they must, just as for platinum, be fixed on electrodes in very large quantities. In 2009, the research teams at the CEA, CNRS and Joseph Fourier University successfully immobilized one of these bio-inspired catalysts, which was nickel-based, on carbon nanotubes. However, this material is only active in very acidic environments. In addition, two reactions are involved in electrolysis: hydrogen production and oxygen production, and, to do without platinum for either of these reactions it is necessary to work in neutral to basic pH conditions. Using the same approach as in 2009, but this time developing a new bio-inspired, cobalt-based catalyst, the same teams have made a major breakthrough thanks to the material capable of working in pH neutral aqueous solutions. The catalytic activity achieved is extremely stable in the long-term, with an incredibly strong bond between catalyst and nanotube.

The researchers have gone even further than this and, at the same time, have developed a second material, also cobalt-based. This is made up of cobalt nanoparticles coated in a cobalt oxo-phosphate. This material, which works in pH neutral water, is quite remarkable since it exists in two forms is able to commute between the two and acts as catalyst in either the production of hydrogen (H2), or in the other essential electrolysis reaction, the production of oxygen (O2) from water. This makes it the first ever "commutable" or "Janus" catalytic material not based on noble metals. As well as replacing platinum, it can also act as an extremely stable catalyst in the production of hydrogen from pH neutral water.

These new cobalt-based materials may potentially be used in developing stable and inexpensive hydrogen production technologies, as a storage "solution" for renewable energies. The researchers are now looking at ways to integrate them into an overall artificial photosynthesis system, enabling the totally renewable production of hydrogen from water and solar power.

Google's Romanian Domain Gets Defaced By Algerian Hacker MCA ...

Looks like Pakistan is not the only place where major Internet companies? domain names can get hacked?hijacked.?This morning, google.ro?was taken over, with the credit being taken by ?Algerian Hacker? MCA-CRB, a serial website defacer. The site looked like the picture above for at least an hour, according to our tipster. It still looked like this when I took the screenshot, although now the site seems to have been taken down altogether.

It appears to be slowly coming back to the normal Google Romania page worldwide now, and is being described as a possible ?DNS hijacking attack? (more below). Google, meanwhile, says that it was ?not hacked? but that someone had managed to redirect visitors to another site for Google.ro and ?a few other web addresses.? (Full statement below.)

Softpedia is reporting that the same thing has happened to Yahoo?s site, but the site looks fine to me right now. Paypal.ro is also redirecting to the same page as Google.ro, although PayPal also operates another site at?https://www.paypal.com/ro/ that is up.

The text on the hacked site reads: ?By MCA-CRB / Algerian Hacker? and gives credit to three names, ?all members Sec? ? so perhaps in one of the many loose groups of hackers that associate themselves with Anonymous and LulzSec. ?S thanks = Mr-AdeL & i-Hmx & Lagripe-Dz All Members Sec,? the page reads.

MCA-DRB is also threatening more. ?To Be Continued ?.? the site says.

That?s not an empty threat, it seems. MCA-DRB, according to Zone-h?s registry of hacked sites, has been responsible for 5,530 site hacks and defacements to date, with many of them appearing to cover government and public services sites from countries across Asia, Africa, Europe, Australia and the Americas. By comparison, the Zone-h attributes 313 sites to Eboz, not counting the 284 from over the weekend.

Interestingly, this doesn?t seem to be happening everywhere. My colleague Drew sent me the screenshot for Google.ro from his computer in California and it seems to look like business as usual:

And it doesn?t seem to be following the same form as this weekend?s defacement exercise in Pakistan, where 284 sites were taken down by a hacker called Eboz. That attack appeared to have to do with the infiltration of the country?s domain registry PKNIC, where all of the affected domain name servers were redirected to servers hosted by Freehostia. But according to current checks on Google.ro, the site is still going to Google name servers.

We are reaching out to Google for comment and will update this story. [Update below.]

Update: Stefan Tanase, a Kaspersky lab expert writing at Securelist, notes that the incident may be due to a ?DNS hijacking? attack. He notes that ?both domains resolve to an IP address located in the Netherlands,? at?95.128.3.172?(server1.joomlapartner.nl), ?so it rather looks like a DNS poisoning attack.?

Google meanwhile says that it was not hacked.

?Google services in Romania were not hacked. For a short period, some users visiting?www.google.ro?and a few other web addresses were redirected to a different website. We are in contact with the organization responsible for managing domain names in Romania,? a spokesperson tells TechCrunch.

In elf ears and wizard hats, 'Hobbit' fans rejoice

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) ? Wearing elf ears and wizard hats, sitting atop their dad's shoulders or peering from balconies, tens of thousands of New Zealanders watched their favorite "Hobbit" actors walk the red carpet Wednesday at the film trilogy's hometown premiere.

An Air New Zealand plane freshly painted with "Hobbit" characters flew low over Wellington's Embassy Theatre, eliciting roars of approval from the crowd.

Sam Rashidmardani, 12, said he came to see Gollum actor Andy Serkis walk the red carpet ? and he wasn't disappointed.

"It was amazing," Rashidmardani said of the evening, adding his Gollum impression: "My precious."

British actor Martin Freeman, who brings comedic timing to the lead role of Bilbo Baggins, said he thought director Peter Jackson had done a fantastic job on "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey."

"He's done it again," Freeman said in an interview on the red carpet. "If it's possible, it's probably even better than 'The Lord of the Rings.' I think he's surpassed it."

While it is unusual for a city so far from Hollywood to host the premiere of a hoped-for blockbuster, Jackson's filming of his lauded 'LOTR' trilogy and now "The Hobbit" in New Zealand has helped create a film industry here. The film will open in theaters around the world next month.

One of the talking points of the film is the choice by Jackson to shoot it using 48 frames per second instead of the traditional 24 in hopes of improving the picture quality.

Some say the images come out too clear and look so realistic that they take away from the magic of the film medium. Jackson likens it to advancing from vinyl records to CDs.

"I really think 48 frames is pretty terrific and I'm looking forward to seeing the reaction," Jackson said on the red carpet. "It's been talked about for so long, but finally the film is being released and people can decide for themselves."

Jackson said it was strange working on the project so intimately for two years and then having it suddenly taken away as the world got to see the movie.

"It spins your head a little bit," he said.

Aidan Turner, who plays the dwarf Kili in the movie, said his character is reckless and thinks he's charming.

"I don't get to play real people it seems, I only get to play supernatural ones," he said. "So playing a dwarf didn't seem that weird, actually.

Perhaps the most well-known celebrities to walk the carpet were Cate Blanchett and Elijah Wood, who reprise their roles in the LOTR in the "Hobbit."

"Mostly I came here to see everyone. I like them all," said fan Aysu Shahin, 16, adding that Wood was her favorite. She said she wanted to see the movie "as soon as possible. I'm excited for it."

At a news conference earlier in the day, Jackson said many younger people are happy to watch movies on their iPads.

"We just have to make the cinema-going experience more magical and more spectacular to get people coming back to the movies again," he said.

Jackson said only about 1,000 of the 25,000 theaters that will show the film worldwide are equipped to show 48 frames, so most people will see it in the more traditional format. The movie has also been shot in 3D.

A handful of animal rights protesters held signs at the premiere.

The protest by the group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals comes after several animal wranglers said three horses and up to two dozen other animals had died during the making of the movies because they were housed at an unsafe farm.

Jackson's spokesman earlier acknowledged two horses had died preventable deaths at the farms but said the production company worked quickly to improve stables and other facilities and that claims of mistreatment were unfounded.

"No mistreatment, no abuse. Absolutely none," Jackson said at the news conference.
