As she guides people through the powerful process of inquiry called The Work, they find that their stressful beliefsabout life, other people, or themselves radically shift and their lives are changed forever.Based on Byron Katie?s direct experience of how suffering is created and ended, The Work is an astonishingly simple process, accessible to people of all ages and backgrounds, and requires nothing more than a pen and paper and an open mind.Through this process, anyone can learn to trace unhappiness to its source and eliminate it there. Katie (as everyone calls her) not only shows us that all the problems in the world originate in our thinking: she gives us the tool to open our minds and set ourselves free.

Arduino-powered Artbot writes the time, erases it, writes again (video)

Watching the seconds go by is a frightening reminder that time pauses for no one, but somehow, a hacker going by the name of Ekaggrat has figured out how to make the process a bit less daunting. The so-called Doodle Clock is an Arduino-powered robotic arm that's been trained to jot down the time with a dry erase marker; once the minute passes, he erases the last digit and rewrites it -- a number beyond what he just erased, of course. Per usual, these things are better seen than read about, so why not hop on past the break and mash play? Smiles await.

Legal History Blog: Wriggins, "Is the Health Insurance Individual ...

Opponents
of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 assert that
the ?individual mandate? is unprecedented, not just in the narrow and
obvious sense that the federal government has never before required
people to have health insurance, but in a much broader sense as well.
They claim government even at the state level has never before required
people to insure themselves. This article examines the assertion that
the mandate is an unprecedented outlier and a sharp departure from all
past government policies. This article finds that the laws in many
states require drivers to purchase insurance coverage for their own
injuries, that several states? laws require drivers to buy coverage for
their own medical expenses, and that liability insurance mandates
protect careless drivers along with their victims. These long-standing
individual insurance mandates have been overlooked by both sides in the
current debate. As requirements for people to insure themselves, they
are clear, powerful precedents for the health insurance individual
mandate. If forced to admit that these laws exist, opponents may then
claim that driving is a pure choice: If people object to state auto
insurance laws, they can simply opt out and choose not to drive, while
there is no opt-out from the individual health insurance mandate. The
article argues that ?driving as a pure choice? is largely illusory and
not a sufficient basis on which to argue that these precedents are
irrelevant.

Finally, the article turns to the forgotten history of auto insurance mandates, drawing lessons from that history for today?s debate. The history shows first that, leaving aside the Commerce Clause arguments which by definition only apply to the federal government, the arguments used to resist auto insurance mandates were strikingly similar to arguments used to oppose the health insurance individual mandate. Second, courts have consistently recognized a link between insurance and the public welfare justifying regulation in the auto context. Third, governments have recognized for decades that the auto insurance market must be regulated to provide a socially optimal level of coverage, as seen in the U.S. Supreme Court?s 1951 decision upholding a California market regulation law. Finally, state governments have long required people to purchase insurance for themselves from private sellers. The health insurance individual mandate is not different in kind from auto insurance individual mandates but rather extends the idea of insurance mandates to an even more important context.

Yahoo sues Facebook as legal war escalates

Yahoo sued Facebook on Monday, the first?major legal battle among technology giants in social media. But patent skirmishes are common in the tech industry. Is Yahoo simply firing the opening shots for a new battlefield?

Yahoo Inc sued Facebook Inc on Monday over 10 patents that include methods and systems for advertising on the Web, according to a copy of the lawsuit.

The lawsuit, filed in a San Jose, California?federal court, marks the first major legal battle among technology giants in social media and a major escalation of patent litigation that has already swept up the smartphone?and tablet sectors and high-tech stalwarts such as Apple?Inc, Microsoft?Corp and Motorola Mobility Holdings?Inc.

Yahoo's patent lawsuit follows Facebook's announcement of plans for an initial public offering that could value the company at about $100 billion. A Facebook spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Monday.

In an emailed statement,?Yahoo?said it is confident it will prevail.

"Unfortunately, the matter with Facebook remains unresolved and we are compelled to seek redress in federal court," the company said in a statement.

Several social networking companies, including Facebook, have seen an uptick in patent claims asserted against them as they move through the IPO process.

However, most of those lawsuits have been filed by patent aggregators that buy up intellectual property to squeeze value from it via licensing deals and none by a large tech company such as?Yahoo.

American Military Society: Pass ?Right to Repair Act? to Support ...

WASHINGTON ??The American Military Society (AMS) urges Congress to pass the Motor Vehicle Owners? Right to Repair Act (HR 1449) on behalf of its membership which includes active, reserve, National Guard, retired and veterans of the uniformed services, their families and survivors.

?Selling a car without complete access to repair information is like selling prescription drugs without the doctor?s dosing instructions. It doesn?t make sense. That?s why we are asking Congress to rectify this situation and pass the Right to Repair Act,? said Charles C. Partridge, Col, USA (Ret) of AMS. ?When local repair shops are denied access to non-proprietary repair information from the car companies, competition is limited. All consumers benefit from competition, but those serving our country and their families at home derive particular benefit from being able to obtain affordable, effective and convenient repairs for their vehicles.?

Right to Repair levels the competitive playing field for motoring consumers and between new car dealerships and independent repair shops by requiring that car companies provide full, fair access at a reasonable cost to all non-proprietary service information, tools and safety-related bulletins needed to repair today?s high-tech motor vehicles. The Right to Repair Act was introduced into the 112th Congress by Reps. Edolphus Towns (D-NY) and Todd Russell Platts (R-PA), and currently has 46 co-sponsors.

?As cars become more complicated with more computer systems, the problem becomes more acute,? continued Partridge. ?Military personnel and their families are often stationed in remote locations far from any dealerships, relying on independent repair shops to service their vehicles. Most do not have the time to find the nearest dealership, drive all the way there and wait for their sole source of transportation to be repaired. If critical repairs go unperformed, then safety may be compromised.? Passage of Right to Repair will ensure that all repair information is readily available to their trusted repair shop so they can have their vehicles repaired close to home, even when their vehicles are more recently out of warranty.?

About the American Military Society:
The American Military Society (AMS) is a non-profit veteran?s organization representing the professional and personal interests of active duty and retired men and women of America?s Uniformed Services, National Guard and Reserve.? Since its founding in 1982, AMS has worked to support all aspects of national security while advancing the interests of the men and women who serve and who have served.? The AMS mission is to advocate improved quality-of-life and economic fairness that will support the well-being of the men and women of America?s Uniformed Services and their families. For more information on the American Military Society, visit www.amsmilitary.org.

About Right to Repair:
The Motor Vehicle Owners? Right to Repair Act (HR 1449), which was introduced by Reps. Edolphus Towns (D-NY) and Todd Platts (R-PA), would require car companies to make the same service information and tools capabilities available to independent repair shops that they provide to their franchised dealer networks. The legislation further provides car companies with strong protections for their trade secrets unless that information is provided to the franchised new car dealers. The bill clarifies the responsibilities of the Federal Trade Commission in enforcing the bill?s requirements. For more information about the Right to Repair Act, visit www.righttorepair.org.
