Every Thanksgiving, America celebrates the gifts they have been given by joining together as family, eating great food, and watching the Macy?s Thanksgiving Day Parade. For those who would prefer to see a parade in person and do not live in New York, normally they would be disappointed. However for those in the San Diego area, there is a wonderful parade held every year, on the Sunday before Thanksgiving. The Mother Goose Parade makes its 64th annual appearance in the city of El Cajon this Sunday, November 18th. Not only is the parade a fun event for the whole family, but it is hosted by the Mother Goose Parade Association, a non-profit organization. All the proceeds, from donations or sponsors, go toward programs intended to benefit San Diego?s youth and the community as a whole.
Arts and culture is promoted through the elementary school?s art contest for the theme of the parade. The winner of the contest gets to ride in a float called ?A Wish Come True? during the parade! Education and personal growth is promoted through leadership and scholarship opportunities for local young women, helping prepare high school-age girls for their college careers. Additionally there are programs promoting self-defense, job searching and resume building, and volunteer work. Health and wellness is addressed in the form of ?Run with the Goose?, a children?s fun run held before the parade. The winner gets a bicycle and a ride on a specially designed float during the parade! Similarly, there is an elementary schools art contest for safety, in which the top artworks depicting safety are displayed on television, and the artists get to ride in a fire truck during the parade. Finally, the parade itself is designed to promote community involvement, and the betterment of its citizens. What better way to educate and improve the community around San Diego than with a fun-filled parade celebrating the start of the holiday season?
As for the parade itself, you can expect marching bands, clowns, horses, representatives of the United States military, dozens of unique and extravagant floats, and much more! The Queen?s Contest honors the young woman who best exemplifies the leadership and scholarship values of Mother Goose Parade Association. Through their volunteering and self-improvement programs, the young woman with the most achievement is chosen, and honored with her own coronation and float from which she can reign. Additionally there are many participants in the parade honoring this year?s theme: Hometown Heroes. While teachers, doctors, police, firefighters, and other public service figures are recognized for their heroic efforts given for the community, the parade commemorates a few special guests. A fallen San Diego police officer tragically killed a few weeks ago, three survivors of the 9/11 terrorist attacks in New York, and members of our military will all be honored and represented in this year?s parade. They will even carry the enormous 30?x58? US flag that has toured the USA in respect after 9/11.
So whether you?re looking for a fun experience with prizes and a great show, an educational experience for you and your family, or simply a chance to honor the heroes of our city and our nation, come to El Cajon this Sunday at 10AM and start your holidays right!
