Serving Oriental fare with strong influences from Vietnam and its neighbouring countries NAGA Restaurant is a gastronomic treat situated right behind High Street Kensington.
The atmosphere upon entering is one of sincere hospitality and it feels as if my guest and I were escaping to another world as the warm environment made a welcome change to the cold winters night we left behind and upon passing the ornate and decorative bar were seated in an elegant and stylish dinning area.
The menu can be described in one word; enticing, and for several minutes I pondered over the delicious array of food on offer. In the end I was forced to hand my decision over to a greater power; co-owner and manager Tri Van Dang, who very kindly offered to select my meal for me.
To start, I had the silken Tofu with ginger dressing and which I can whole heartedly say was the best tofu I have ever tasted. The texture was silky-smooth; similar to that of a set custard and the ginger dressing added the perfect amount of flavour to what is normally a very bland ingredient. I also enjoyed for starters the Crisp Chilli Salt Squid and Duck and Watermelon salad; both excellent choices to begin the meal.
Up next was the Naga Black Cod; a subtlety sweet and caramelised fillet of Cod served wrapped in a Banana leaf with Crispy Shredded Chicken and stir fried Egg Noodles and Beans Sprouts. The Cod was beautifully moist and cooked to perfection; the subtly sweet flavour working wonderfully with the firm tender flesh. The Crispy Shredded Chicken was also delightful and the Noodles and Bean Sprouts working as the perfect accompaniment. However the star of the main, and in fact whole meal, was the Garlic French Beans which hands down are the best vegetable accompaniment I have ever tasted; so much so I asked Tri for the recipe, to which he replied was a secret dating back to the late 1980?s. The meal was rounded off with a beautiful Chocolate Fondant; not authentic Oriental but exquisite nonetheless.
NAGA is the place to come for Oriental Food that is both authentic and delicious. The restaurant is chic and sophisticated and is the ideal location for a romantic meal for two or fun night out with friends; I can?t recommend it highly enough.
