Online Video Marketing ? 3 Tips for Small Business Success ...

?

online video advertising is big business these days, and as you?d expect, there?s always someone out there ready and willing to take your money in return for some flashy and slick video production.

Now, the thing with online video marketing is you really don?t have to spend a lot of money on equipment and you don?t have to go to a studio. Anyone who tells you otherwise is pulling a fast one.

I film all my own videos on a Kodak Zi10 (you can?t get the Zi8 any more, I believe) a fairly cheap microphone, a simple tripod and a memory card that goes in the camera ? and the whole thing cost me under ?200.

And the scenery is free ? but unfortunately you?d have to move to Ireland to get it.

But that?s not the point. You can shoot your online advertising videos anywhere.

Now, a guy I met a long time ago did a lot of video testing (and he tested this to death) and he found the more casual, unscripted, and unprofessional his videos were ? like being filmed in the middle of his field with just a T-shirt on and a funny hat ? he got a better response than if he was sitting at his desk in his library.

And we can theorise all we like about why this might be, but there?s a good chance it was because if you look too professional you?re obviously trying to make a sale. I mean, who else but a salesman wears a suit, and talks to you about the benefits of a product or service?

Whereas, if you?re more friendly and unprofessional, so to speak, and casual, you?re actually putting yourself on the side of the person you?re talking to.

Rather than being on the other side of the table, you?re on the same side of the table. So that?s probably why it works better.

But, of course, you can test it in your own Market. All you need to do is follow these three simple tips:

1. Make a list of the top ten most frequently asked questions about your products or services.

2. Make a list of the top ten most INFREQUENTLY asked questions about your products or services that OUGHT to be asked.

3. Make a simple 3 minute video answering each one, upload it all to YouTube, and you?re done (you can also use the audio for Podcasts and get it transcribed and use the content for articles, blog posts, and article marketing).

The point is don?t go rushing out spending money on studio time and expensive professional equipment.

A simple camera, like the Zi10 (it?s sometimes called the PlayTouch), cheap microphone, tripod, memory card ? all under ?200.

Nice scenery and a sunny day and you?ve got yourself a decent online marketing video you can use to great effect.

liberation: NZ Politics Daily: 29 May

At each stage of the ?baby boomer? life cycle the decisions benefitting them have always been pushed as ?what was best (and necessary) for the country as a whole. And so it is now. The current pressure on National to agree to raise the age of eligibility for superannuation is perversely pushed as being necessary to remedy ?intergenerational unfairness? ? see, for example, Grant Miller?s?Doing nothing about super. It?s exactly the opposite in many ways but that shouldn?t come as a surprise to anyone who has tracked the fortunes of this ?lucky generation?.

?

If you were born in the 1950s you would have grown up as New Zealand?s economy boomed, with almost zero unemployment. If your family couldn?t afford a decent private rental there were literally entire suburbs of state houses built and available at low rent. These were not the multi-story blocks that later tenants had to endure, but roomy, well-built (and now much sought after) houses with quarter acre sections. If you wanted to own your own house but didn?t have the deposit then your universal family benefit could be capitalised and there were subsidised housing corporation loans to make sure the mortgage payment weren?t too onerous. Most health and education services were, for all intents and purposes, free. School donations were actually donations ? not invoiced with threats of exclusion if not paid.? Tertiary education required almost no fees and living allowances were easily accessible, along with plentiful holiday employment.

2 kiwisaver NZ Politics Daily - Bryce Edwards Otago University liberation blog - www.liberation.org.nz

Of course the top marginal tax rate was 66% in order to pay for all these benefits. But in the late 80s, just as middle class baby boomers entered their high earning years, the top tax rate was halved. That meant the next generation had to start paying and borrowing for their education, along with market rentals for state house tenants and numerous other user-pays charges.

?

A new generation of graduates already saddled with mortgage sized debt wasn?t really a problem. They were told the need to own your own home was irrational and there were plenty of houses they could rent from the well-off baby boomers, who were furiously investing their surplus income in property, claiming deductions but still free of any tax on their substantial capital gains. House prices rocketed ? which was great for growing untaxed wealth, but was a disaster for families trying to buy their first home.

?

Baby boomers who joined Kiwsaver early will have received the highest proportion of Government subsidy for their savings ? the state?s generosity is already being ratcheted down. Kiwisaver funds will be the icing on the cake for baby boomers, but is likely to be the main staple for those that follow with auto-enrolment already planned and compulsion being mooted by Labour (see: Alex Tarrant?s?Labour considers not letting KiwiSaver savings out of NZ). John Armstrong certainly sees the writing on the wall: ?it might survive as a vital back-stop for those unable to save for their retirement if the bulk of workers can draw their retirement incomes from elsewhere. It stands to reason that the more workers there are with KiwiSaver schemes, the less the future pressure on the existing state scheme? ? see:?Shift that would turn Key into a superman.

? 2 super 65 67 labour NZ Politics Daily - Bryce Edwards Otago University liberation blog - www.liberation.org.nz

Paper boys and girls are having their taxes increased to save a few million and childcare subsidies are being reduced, but huge sums are still flowing to the ?lucky generation? each year. The government apparently had no choice but to fork out $1.6 billion to save (overwhelmingly older) finance company investors who chased a few extra dollars in return for much higher risk. Treasury had kindly underwritten these risks and, as usual, the boomer?s well-being was deemed essential to all taxpayers.

?

Particularly hard hit will be Maori, Pacific people and those on low incomes whose relative life expectancy worsened in the 80s and 90s, a gap which has never been made up (see: Otago University?s?Unequal playing fields). The number of years they will be able to securely retire will be dramatically cut ? many Maori and Pacific males will never see a pension. Raising the retirement age is not only an intergenerational transfer of wealth ? it is effectively a massive shift in public benefits to middle and high income pakeha retirees.?

?

We shouldn?t be surprised that the ever-increasing health spend goes largely unquestioned and attempts to direct it to more cost-effective prevention rather than treatment continue to be resisted. We can probably look forward in a few years to greater government regulation and subsidies for funeral services ? those customised Harley Davidson hearses don?t come cheap.

?

Raising the age of entitlement to superannuation is presented as the only option. It is apparently unthinkable that we should ask the most well-off of a generation to contribute back some of the wealth they have accumulated (thanks to their dream run through the welfare state) so that their children can at least retire with the same security as the ?lucky generation?.?

?

Luck, as they say, has nothing to do with it.

Will the incoming government be as bereft of analysis and vision as the left was after Muldoon? Last time the consequence was Rogernomics?.

Scalado Photobeamer for iOS brings rapid photo sharing to any web-connected display (video)

Scalado's latest 99 cent app for iOS only does one little thing, but it does it well. Its singular mission is to let you share an image from your Camera Roll to any web-connected display in front of you, without having to navigate through a more sophisticated file-sharing platform or use extra hardware on the receiving device. That recipient can be anything -- a smart TV, tablet, PC, Mac, games console, whatever -- so long as it has a browser pointed at the Photobeamer homepage. That page displays a QR code, which provides all the clever linkage you need: you simply load up the app on your mobile, pick the image you want to share, and then point the rear camera at the QR code to beam the image across via the web.

Having given it a quick test, we'd say it's definitely up to regular domestic challenges where you just want to display a few photos rather than perhaps videos or presentation slides, and where there's no need to print or store shared images. You can swipe left and right between different pictures in your gallery, and also choose whether you want those images to be fitted to the recipient display or resized to fill it. There's a video after the break to help you decide if that's worth a dollar, while the Photobeamer app itself waits patiently at the iTunes link below.

Pusha T's 'Exodus 23:1' Video: No Hints At Lil Wayne Beef

G.O.O.D. Music MC's gritty new visual accompanies fiery track that Weezy took exception to.
By Rob Markman

Pusha T in his "Exodus 23:1" video
Photo: Universal

If Pusha T was challenging Lil Wayne on "Exodus 23:1," he makes no allusion to Weezy in the song's video, which he dropped on Tuesday morning (May 29).

Not that Wayne waited for the visual to respond. On Friday, Tunechi dropped "Ghoulish," a venom-laced dart aimed directly at the G.O.O.D. Music MC. Still, in Pusha's new vid there's no hint of rap beef, just a gritty look into a street life where dealers sell to soulless junkies and live to reap the profits.

In the Old Testament, Exodus 23:1 warns: "Do not spread false reports. Do not help a wicked man by being a malicious witness." On Pusha's track of the same name, he chastises rappers who he feels embellish their street ties; he then proceeds to cast ambiguous stones at unnamed figures — widely believed to be Drake and Lil Wayne. With the "Exodus 23:1" video, the Virginia lyricist presents a realistic look at the underbelly of the frequently glamorized drug game. Though the scenes are staged for the camera, it's plausible that the man smoking crack (or heroin) from a beer can is no actor.

The Samuel Rogers-directed video is set in the rough-and-tumble Berkley section of Norfolk, Virginia, on Walker Avenue to be exact. "Beef is best served like steak/ Well done, get a gun in your face," Push begins, evoking the Notorious B.I.G. and clearly inspired by the late rapper's 1997 track "What's Beef."

Push continues to rap in a number of different settings: riding atop a bicycle handlebars, on a street corner surrounded by his street family and in a kitchen while a buddy sniffs coke from a dollar bill seemingly unaware of the camera's gaze (or quite aware).

The Clipse rapper throws up gang signs when he spits the lyric, "Throwin' that flag up, runnin' 'round you hot sh--/ Takin' half of everything you get." And though Wayne openly has played up his affiliation with the Bloods, Push could be rapping about any number of individuals with gang affiliations. The same can be said for the next line, which many believe is aimed at Drake: "Contract all f---ed up, I guess that means you're all f---ed up/ You're signed to one n---a, that's signed to two n---as, that's signed to three n---as, now that's bad luck."

There are also no visual references to Wayne, Drizzy or any member of the YMCMB camp in the four-minute, 23-second clip. But there is a clear message that Pusha T is sending: mainly, that he takes street life very seriously. Though we may see him on the VMA stage with Kanye West or out in Cannes with his G.O.O.D. Music crew, his background isn't all bright lights and billboard hits, and Push raps it all with one figurative hand on the bible.

What do you think of Pusha T's "Exodus 23:1" video? Let us know in the comments!

Affiliate programs can add a huge number of impartial revenue people to help industry your merchandise and services.

Over the many years I?ve been concerned with a lot of companies, and one from the issues I keep in mind from my Amway days was that as an individual, I could only do so considerably. I have 24 hours each day, 7 days a week, 52 weeks a 12 months by which I can operate. I?ll hit a maximum position of product sales that I can handle by myself. Immediately after that I?m carried out. The only way to do far more is usually to automate and have other individuals replicate what I do. The identical is correct around the internet. We must automate and duplicate what we do so we are able to have other people increase our product sales for us. The initial element of the equation is duplication. We can have other people adhere to what we do and market our solutions and services for us and pay them a portion in the income. This really is unique than having workers. Employees don?t have any prerequisite to offer. They?re overhead that should be compensated regardless of product sales. That may be NOT what you need for a new enterprise. Maintain your challenging earned money for other factors. What we need is an individual that is definitely willing to complete the perform for portion with the income. This really is exactly where affiliate programs come in to our system for success. Affiliates are essentially a partnership among web internet sites to advertise and market solutions, solutions, or details for a share with the income. When someone they make reference to you buys, you pay them a percentage from the product sales. Outcome? More traffic, a lot more product sales and less time expected by you to find the buyers as someone else does it for you.

What else can a great affiliate program do for you personally?

? Obtaining certified prospects that you can follow-up on to enhance or up market to.
? Increasing the links for your web-site which will improve the position of one?s web-site within the search engines like google resulting in a lot more targeted traffic and far more revenue.

You can find all types of affiliate programs. Some applications cost to become a member and some do not. Some are internet based mostly and some are software program programs which you load in your computer to set up and track the product sales and affiliate oneself. Which one you utilize is up to you. Here are a handful of that I have discovered.

Affiliate Internet ? This really is one of the much more inexpensive server side affiliate programs. Using this software package there are actually no month-to-month charges only an one time software package charge. At the time of this writing this package deal bought from $49.ninety five to $99.95. Referral Software ? This package can also be server side although a lot more pricey, it has numerous additional attributes and is really worth though to consider should you be severe about earning many money together with your Internet company. At the time of this writing this package deal offered for $299.00.

Click Financial institution ? This can be a net based affiliate system. By signing up on their internet internet site you have got access to over one hundred,000 affiliates. You will discover monthly and set up charges.

I highly suggest affiliate applications. For the reasons outlined above. Keep in mind they will aid drive targeted traffic for your web site, which means far more product sales and you are able to use the affiliate applications to provide other people services and make the commission once you will be accomplished with the consumer. Why Real Estate Investors Need A Strategic Plan

It is mocking that many of us would never regard of having life-altering operation achieved on ourselves or the youngster without initial knowing what the blood tests, x-rays and lab results uncover and what the medicine recommends formed on this evidence. We would never erect a world-class review without initial having an granted set of architectural drawings ready by an architect.

Yet many of us outlay more time planning the eighth month than you do the own business and financial security. Some even settle corporations or paltry partnerships or trusts with small or no considered since to because or how they fit with the rest of the retirement, estate, taxation or financial life.

START WITH YOUR ? CORE VALUES ? .

Many planners purchase in to the widely-held parable that business estate, retirement or financial planning is usually about transferring ?the money? rsther than than the high quality of life and the core values together with the assets. Instead of starting with what the customers wish their young kids and grandchildren to mount for and accomplish, many concentration instead on luck initial and family second.

As a result, estate planning, retirement and financial planning turn focused on certitude documents, notarized signatures, coverage amounts and appropriation strategies rsther than than how these utilitarian collection exercise the prophesy and goals of the parents. Our young kids get the values just as certainly as they get whatever you have gathered financially. Their stewardship and the financial choices are similarly as important.

DADDY ? WHERE DO ?CORE VALUES? COME FROM?

I?m frequently astounded just how far people will go in their financial life without a roadmap. They will frequently ?put the barrow before the horse?. They settle insurance coverage, business entities, partnerships, assorted kinds of certitude structures, taxation planning and retirement skeleton without a clear, courteous and well-defined matter of precisely because they are carrying out it in the initial place, what personal core values such choices simulate and how they wish their heirs to request the properties being acquired. It?s similar to office building a oppulance review without an architectural outline or having leading operation with no x-rays being completed before-hand.

STEP ONE : HAVE A WRITTEN PLAN THAT MAKES SENSE.

o Start by assessing not usually what you have right away in the way of assets, but what your future skeleton are and the dreams and goals that you wish to matter in the lives of your young kids and grandchildren. The finish outcome can develop in to a personal ?Values and Vision Statement?. It should simulate what you and your young kids as adults will wish to be well known to have stood for.

o Next, accumulate your critical papers. These add a net value statement, insurance policies, retirement accounts, estate planning documents, taxation earnings and a list of any business or investment land you currently or outline to have together with your income and responsibility statement.

o Most important, have an ?integrated? Strategic Solutions Plan? created by someone that knows what they?re doing. If you are using a business consultant, CPA or financial advisor, their skill may be really willing to help in implementing the outline once it has been developed. To be integrated, it should add tax, estate, mortgage, insurance, retirement and business planning. It should be formed on the data you provide. That way, the planner can investigate your planning ?as is? to be able to develop a step-by-step action outline that ?make sense? and is easy to understand, follow and implement.

o Finally, once the Strategic Solutions Plan is completed, read it delicately and ponder any of the recommendations. Look at the taxation extra savings that may be possible. Consider how you can upgrade your legal case insurance by implementing established combinations of legal entities.

Ensure that the privacy component will complement your insurance against identity theft and fraud. See what estate planning improvements make clarity along with your financial and retirement planning. This will prevent the complaint of putting the barrow before the horse, and will help keep you on follow as you pierce forward.

STEP TWO : PUTTING YOUR PLAN ?IN MOTION?.

The final step is as critical as the first. It?s the Implementation Phase. It is the follow-through that really counts, and in the Implementation Phase, your planning ?comes home?. By having your roadmap in front of you and your advisors ready to assist, you can move forward with confidence, knowing that you have established priorities, goals and have a context in that to pierce forward.

Your implementation of vital solutions may be a source of great satisfaction. Whether you select to highlight the multiple-generation estate planning, business entity formation, taxation efficiency, chance administration and retirement planning or concentration on formulating a tax-free inheritance, having a outline that creates clarity and a that you?re cozy with gives you a roadmap with that your advisors can map out a improved march for a more secure and cozy future.

Having written thousands of Strategic Plans for others over the years, I?ve schooled from long experience that the more definite the Plan, and the improved ?tied-in? it is to your priorities and values, the more expected it is that you will obviously exercise the Recommendations.

HIV charity closure hits North West?s LGBT community

Hundreds of people in Greater Manchester and beyond are now in need of support after a major HIV charity lost more than ?1.5million over five years.

Body Positive North West, based in Whalley Range, Manchester, announced it was folding due to ?financial pressures?.

Despite counselling services still remaining available via Talking Therapies, eleven staff members will lose their jobs and the hundreds of people suffering from HIV and AIDS in the area will be forced to seek help from other avenues.

Michael Snaith, ex-service user and founder of the Greater Manchester Coalition for HIV and AIDS, said even though many found the charity to be ?badly managed?, this closure would leave a gaping hole in the North West?s HIV/AIDS support network.

?There was a lot of negativity from ex-service users but we are all very very sad that the service is closing,? he said.

?I really do feel sorry for the service users, and the staff. The liquidators came in and now they?re just concerned about selling their services.?

Since an estimated 80% of Body Positive?s service users were from the LGBT community, there is increasing pressure on health services to do more to promote the use of condoms and stop the spread of infection.

Figures from the Health Protection Agency (HPA) showed the North West had the largest number of people outside of London accessing HIV treatment. They also revealed that half of people undergoing treatment in the North West were homosexual men ? and this group remained most at risk of acquiring HIV infection in the UK.

Mr Snaith said: ?Safer sex among gay men in Manchester doesn?t seem to be recognised.

?I really do think the government should do more. There are so many people living with HIV and we are going to be bottom of every list. It?s still just not talked about enough.?

Users of Body Positive have been advised to approach the George House Trust?as an alternative source of advice and?support.

Rick Scott Cleans Florida?s Voter Rolls (again)

Image: VeracityStew.com / Cartoon: Flickr/DonkeyHotey

Florida finds itself in the news again regarding voters and registration, but this time the dissatisfaction is arising from within the state, rather than from outside as was the case in the Gore/Bush election of 2000. Democratic Congressman Ted Deutch is claiming Republican Governor Rick Scott is actively attempting to suppress voter turnout by removing ?180,000?citizens from the state?s registration rolls. Deutch?s concerns stem from the fact the list of ineligible voters is incorrect, and several false removals have allegedly occurred.

Critics of the efforts to clean voter rolls acknowledge that?s it is not as much an issue of voter fraud in Florida, as it is voter disenfranchisement. In the months following the disastrous 2000 Presidential Election and Florida?s infamous role in anointing George Bush as president, The Palm Beach Post did an investigation looking at voters purged prior to that election. There were some interesting facts that emerged as the investigation progressed. Unfortunately, they were a bit predictable, too.

While no one is making the overt claim that the purpose in purging voter rolls is discriminatory, it?s hard to ignore the results of that purge. After a Miami mayoral race was discovered to have had dead people voting, a major contract was awarded to a company to weed out those who were registered but ineligible to vote for whatever reason.? What the 2000 Presidential election highlighted was that the purges, in many instances, were incorrect. A Palm Beach Post computer analysis found approximately 1,100 eligible voters who had been incorrectly denied the opportunity to vote. Given that George W. Bush won Florida, and therefore the election over Al Gore, those inaccuracies very well could have cost Gore the election in during the contentious ballot re-count and investigation of hanging chads.

Even more stunning was the revelation that while African-Americans only comprise 11% of Florida voters, an unprecedented 88% of those expunged from the voter rolls were African-American. Does this mean anything when the current governor is making efforts at completing yet another purge from the voter rolls? What do they stand to gain by disenfranchising voters?

What we?re seeing is a typical difference between the two primary political parties. Democrats seek to open the opportunity to register and vote to anyone and everyone who IS eligible to vote. Republicans seek to disenfranchise voters, and limit opportunity through methods such as voter roll purges and redistricting. Is there a possibility that Gov. Scott?s efforts to clear voter rolls are not based on good democratic principles, and is instead another thinly veiled attempt to sway the upcoming presidential election?

As a Republican, Rick Scott has fallen out of favor with his party, perceived as not Republican enough, or a RINO (Republican In Name Only). By capitulating to typical Republican warfare tactics, he may be seeking to ingratiate himself with his own party again. He knows Florida will be a battleground state one more time, and by helping the party machine in advance he?s playing the political game, with little regard for the damage to the principle of democracy.

Congressman Deutch is concerned about the potential for errors, as the state has already experienced. For those inaccurately denied their chance to cast a vote in the 2000, the chance of being singled out again is a real possibility. What Deutch and in all likelihood the rest of the Florida delegation should be supporting is cleaning up the registered voters in an accurate and appropriate manner. No one is arguing that voters shouldn?t be registered per Florida?s laws, but when the state has a history of denying eligible voters the chance to vote, it?s an easy assumption to make that mischief may be afoot. For Rick Scott and Florida?s sake, let?s hope there?s not.

Devices' embrace of disabled community is improving, but big challenges lie ahead

Brothers Adam, 10, left, and Brendan Koeppl,11, have autism and use an iPad to help with their motor skills, eye/hand coordination, learning facial/verbal expressions and learning to verbalize wants and needs. (Photos by Teesha McClam, Dayton Daily News/Special to The Denver Post)

When the iPad debuted two years ago, there was lots of talk about whether people beyond the iPhone and Mac faithful would use such a thing.

But it became very clear to a particular group of people ? advocates for those with autism spectrum disorders ? that the device could be a new tool for communication and education in that community, something perhaps even Apple didn't foresee. Some autism-related apps aid conversation between parents and children, while others help with learning words or social skills.

In fact, there are now so many autism-related apps for the iPad and other iOS devices that there's "Autism Apps," an app that provides a comprehensive list.

Kel Smith, a blogger, consultant and founder of the Philadelphia-based technology accessibility company Anikto LLC, has been studying technology shifts like this one for a book he's working on, "Digital Outcasts: Moving Technology Forward Without Leaving People Behind."

It revolves around "accessibility," the idea that websites, apps, hardware and other technology should be designed in ways that do not shut them out to those with disabilities including blindness, hearing loss and other physical limitations.

But the concept of the book is changing as Smith works on it.

"I went in with the premise that there's entire populations of people who are being left behind; they're not being considered. Then I realized, they're the ones driving the innovation and moving it forward. They're forming their own solutions at this very grassroots level."

Smith's company Anikto (the word is Greek for "Open") has for years been advocating more accessible web design, hardware and software. In recent years, he says, tech companies are realizing that they're leaving money on the table by not making their sites or products accessible.

"Ten years ago, I was being laughed out of boardrooms for bringing up that we should make things accessible," Smith says. "Now, there's a

Adam and Brendan play HalfBrick-Fruit Ninji on their iPad to help with their motor skills and eye/hand coordination.

greater recognition that there's a market for this type of stuff and it's not just what we do on a secular level."

The idea is that designers should think about accessibility because it's in their own best interests ? in addition to being altruistic.

For companies selling products online, for instance, "You have to understand that people who have a disability that prevents them from leaving the home will be shopping from home. You don't want to have barriers (to) that purchasing decision," he says.

What's more, the cost for individuals and nonprofits to create their own web design tools and apps is falling, making it easier than ever for technology for the disabled to be distributed and for communities online to get the word out about them.

Another big shift is that for years, accessibility was largely focused on how the web is viewed on computers, how the online world interacts with computers, and mice and text-to-speech devices.

But now, much of people's web browsing is moving to mobile devices like smart phones, which have much smaller screens. We're also being introduced to personal tech like Microsoft's Xbox 360 Kinect, which relies on gestures and movement.

These new interfaces can be a double-edged sword. They provide "a whole new array of possibilities," Smith says, "and a whole new array of problems... We're almost back to square one in terms of web accessibility."

Improvements in tech accessibility are likely to benefit an increasing number of people as aging baby boomers will soon dictate the demand for devices suitable for people with limited motor skills, hand-eye coordination, poor vision and hearing.

California says it shouldn't have to return foreign-bought execution drug to FDA

CDCR

California's lethal injection chamber at San Quentin State Prison.

The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation is arguing that it doesn't have to give up its stock of the lethal injection drug sodium thiopental to the federal government. In a letter dated May 1, 2012, CDCR General Counsel Benjamin Rice told Domenic Veneziano, director of the FDA's Division of Import Operations and Policy, that "CDCR must decline to return the thiopental in its possession at this time."

The letter was in response to the FDA's order in April that states that imported the execution drug from abroad stop using them and return them to the FDA.?

The drug, sodium thiopental, is an anesthetic used by many states as an execution drug. In California, the drug is the first of three used ? the condemned inmate is first put to sleep using thiopental, then given a paralyzing drug, followed by a third drug that stops his or her heart.

In 2010, the US experienced a massive shortfall in sodium thiopental supplies because the sole US manufacturer lacked a necessary ingredient. That firm, Hospira, was also the only source of the drug approved by the FDA. The company has since completely abandoned making the drug, as it had always objected to its use in executions.

Amidst this scarcity, California and several other states purchased sodium thiopental from?a company in the United Kingdom. Some have used the drug in executions. At the time, the FDA, did not interfere with the states importing the drug.

In April of this year, following a lawsuit by death row inmates, the FDA issued a letter ordering the states that bought foreign drugs to return their supplies to the agency. The inmates had argued the drugs had not been reviewed for their effectiveness. If the drug didn't work properly, they argued, they could experience severe pain during an execution, a violation of the Eight Amendment's ban on cruel and unusual punishment.?

The CDCR, in its May 1 letter, the CDCR urged the FDA to appeal the ruling in the death row inmates' suit, Cook v. FDA. The FDA apparently agrees. On Friday, the agency?filed papers in federal court?to appeal the ruling's ban on importing foreign sodium thiopental.?

The Kobe That We Used to Know: Gotye Parody Laments Decline of Lakers Star

L.A. Lakers fans Dan Rib and Ken Belcher rip Kobe Bryant for not being “The Kobe That We Used to Know” in this hilarious parody of Gotye's hit song.

Following the Lakers' unceremonious dismissal from the playoffs at the hands of Oklahoma City this week, the duo took out their frustration musically.

With references to the triangle offense, Bryant's maligned teammates, his running Shaq out of town after the 2004 season and, of course, Kobe's ball-hogging tendencies, the video set almost perfectly to Gotye's "Somebody That I Used to Know" is classic:
